I am taught that they can be not identical to each other, i.e. one carbon chain can have 3 carbons whilst another can have 2 carbons, all you have to do is pick the highest priority one (most atomic number) Is this correct?

This is technically incorrect but not uncommon. Prioritization with atomic number is used in the (E) / (Z) system. The cis / trans system compares identical substituents and does not use prioritization. If there are not 2 identical substituents, you *technically* should not use the cis / trans system at all. However, it is usually easy to understand cis / trans prefixes even when they are applied to situations where it is technically not appropriate. When in doubt, use (E) / (Z) because it is ALWAYS appropriate.

@@RoxiHuletwesome, thanks, doing the SCH4U curriculum and we are only taught cis-trans stereoisomerism, so unfortunately I can only use that

When you can use Z and E please

As long as each carbon of the alkene has 2 different substituents, you can use E / Z notation.
