Roky was the high shaman of Psychedelia, and this song is the gospel, calling us back to our higher Self. Don't pass it by...

This song defies description or classification. Psychedelic, but not psychedelic. A drone that has echoes of, but predates, krautrock. The lyrics are a stream of consciousness that relay Tommy Hall's exploration of Eastern mysticism. As in all Elevators songs , the unique sound of Hall's electric jug, allied to Roky's thrilling vocals and Stacy Sutherland's solid guitar work creates a timeless, other worldly classic.

Others may have their own meanings and the real meaning may be something completely different but for me this was one of my meditation songs. A reminder to go within (slip inside) and meditate and experience the light within. "Don't pass by" the opportunity to experience the bliss within.

A unique song in form, content and performance. No real solo; the guitar is used to lead to another verse. No real chorus that is repeated. A unifying theme (slip inside this house) used in a number of different ways. A fantastic song, even more so considering its nascence FIFTY years ago. A true psychedelic song.

There’s a radio station in Russia called Rock FM which quite often airs The Elevators. That’s how I learned about them. It’s a surprise for me they are so much underestimated in the States, I used to think it was a quite famous band.

acido the wakener from a long interest in esotericism, it's poetically referencing spiritual alchemy found in mystery schools. (A realm that psychedelics can short circuit one to experience insights of.) Probably my favourite song of all time, because of it's subject matter ... multidimensional eternal Life.

Not to break up the party but the line in question at the 7:34 mark should be "They can yodel where they will" not yo-yo. Many of the 13th Floor Elevators lyrics deal with trying to communicate or connect on a different if not higher plane. In a song like this they would never be making reference to a child's toy.
@Upstreamprovider
3 жыл бұрын
Do you know that for a fact? I'm not saying it isn't but I've never come across any rendition of the lyrics that says yodel and it certainly sounds like yo-yo...the association I always had was basically they're yo-yo'ing in samsara. For instance, years ago when I had a muddier version I always heard "there's infinite survival in the high that's in the flow..." Just as cool, and more or less the same sentiment, but obviously in hindsight NOT Tommy's original lyric. Cool one, though, mate. Thanks.

That was a joke when they lipped sinc'd this song of he Larry Kane show (an American Bandstand local knock off in Houston back in the day). The more I think about it, that show was really a dumb attempt to make Houston 'longhairs' hip, like the British kids were perceived to have been. But 'Slip Inside' was a hell of a fantastic journey to listen to...even now while in the autumn of my years!!
