This is a selection and collection of lectures in Dynamic Meteorology.
In this lecture, we use the potential vorticity. There are many forms of potential vorticity and this one is the most simple. It is related to the depth of a rotating column of air. Since the depth of the column is related to temperature, potential vorticity links the momentum equation to the thermodynamic equation.
In a barotropic fluid constant pressure surfaces are also constant density surfaces. Therefore, through the equation of state, they are constant density surfaces. That means there is not thermal energy available to convert to motion, that is, kinetic energy. This leads to a simple, powerful, and meaningful ways to analyze flows in the atmosphere, for example, the flow over a mountain range.
