This is the second video in a mini-series looking at upgrades to an old Lima ringfield/pancake motor-driven Class 47 locomotive, enabling it to be used on a DCC layout alongside more modern models.
Due to the length of time that it takes to carry out all of the modifications, the lighting segment of the project has been split into two separate videos, Part 2a and Part 2b. In this part, we begin to look at installing directional lighting.
The video covers the removal of the dummy forward lights, drilling holes for new rear lights, preparing new working headlights and headcode maps using miniature LEDs.
NB. This is a step-by-step video produced in response to subscriber requests. If you're not up for a long video looking at each part in detail, this isn't the video for you!
The wiring diagram referred to in the video can be downloaded here: www.strathpefferjunction.com/dcc-decoder-wiring-diagrams-for-non-dcc-ready-locomotives
Items required for the modification work and installation are:
- Miniature pre-wired surface-mount LEDs (4 x warm white, 2 x cold white & 4 x red)
- Resistors (2.5K ohm & 10K ohm)
- 1mm dia. fibre optic
- Paint stripper
- Cyanoacrylate glue (Superglue)
- Glue 'n Glaze glue
- BlackTak
- Kapton tape
- Heat shrink
- Hot air gun or cigarette lighter
- Soldering iron, solder & liquid flux
- Pin vice and drill bits
- Various tools, including: jeweller's screwdrivers, small side cutters, wire strippers, modelling saw, an exacto knife and a cutting mat.
In Part 2b, we'll finish preparing the rear lights and then move onto wiring everything up and getting it all functional...
