Inserting a virtual instrument into Reaper is easy. I recommend going to the “Track” menu and using “Insert virtual instrument on new track…” If you do this alot, you can use the “Actions” section to assign a keyboard shortcut to this command. For this example, I will select the synth called “Surge.”
You can choose multiple outputs for creative mixing and spatialization options, but for this example I will just use stereo, so click “No” and we’re done.
Here are four options to get sound from the virtual instrument:
1) If you have your external MIDI device enabled in Preferences, under “Audio” and “MIDI Devices,” you can select your physical instrument in the input for the track.
2) The Virtual MIDI Keyboard is also a great option. Select Virtual MIDI Keyboard in the track input section, I’ll use “All Channels” then, under the “View” menu, select “Virtual MIDI Keyboard.” It has the computer qwerty equivalents laid out. Left/right arrow keys change the octave that the computer keyboard plays. You can even dock it if you want to by right-clicking on the bottom section and choosing, “Dock Virtual MIDI Keyboard in Docker.”
3) Another way to get sounds: With your track selected, go under the “Insert” menu and select “New MIDI Item” double-click and edit in your choice of Piano Roll, Named Notes, Event List, or Notation.
4) And finally, one of my favorite ways to get sounds comes built in with Reaper and is a sequencer called Megababy. Go to FX and Insert it BEFORE your virtual instrument and start adding notes…press play when you want sound.
