I liked _Brunelleschi’s Dome_ a lot when I read it, it certainly makes you think.

I second Wood, Gordon-Reed, and Ginsburg! I’ll add Natalie Zemon Davis’s The Return of Martin Guerre (roughly 150 pages)-which is the only book originally published by a US university press to be turned into a movie starring Gerard Depardieu.

I almost included Martin Guerre but my memory (faulty) told me that I had mentioned it somewhat recently and I didn’t include it. The Gerard Depardue movie is so much better than the Richard Gere / Jody Foster version.

What a great list, Brian. Some wonderful selections! I, too, have had Elaine Pagels on my shelf forever and haven’t gotten to her. I think I’d like to revisit Ta-Nehisi Coates. Thanks, Brian.

I read 'Between the World and Me' last week after I read an interaction between yourself and another youtuber whose name I can't remember. It was great, thank you. I'll save this video for future reference. I'd recommend all of James Baldwin's essays as well. I think all are less than 150 pages.

Thank you as always for your great comment. I should have included Baldwin here. I have read most of his essays, but because I have them in a big, on volume bind up of sorts I didn’t think about the fact that they qualify as shorties.

I initially had Baldwin’s essays in mass market paperbacks. When Library of America’s collection came out, I got rid of them all except _Fire Next Time_ (which was a trade anyway).

@davidnovakreadspoetry He's becoming my favourite author, and I haven't even read his fiction.

@@Barklord I was never so fond of Baldwin’s fiction, but I seem to be a minority in that.

My daughter read the juvenile edition of the Ona Judge book when she was in 4th grade and loved it. She even did a presentation on it in school (which caused some minor issues, but that's a different story...)

Thanks for the video, and reminding me of the Angela Davis book.I've meant to read it for many years. She has intrigued me since 1970, when I was in high school. My bro was an undergrad at UCLA then, when Davis was an assistant professor there. She was fired because of " inflammatory " speech. My bro said she'd raise her fist and shout " power to the people". She sported a gigantic afro at the time (as my brother's photos confirm). I still find her fascinating!!

Angela Davis was an activist in the 60s/70s and on. I believe she was imprisoned for a while on totally fake chargeable accessory to murder. Toni Morrison convinced her to write her memoirs and then edited it.

Thank you for some great suggestions. However, wasn't it Harrison, not Mitchell, who came up with the solution in "Longitude"? Or did they both contribute significantly and I just remember Harrison? .
