The assassination of Emperor Domitian by conspiring senators leads to an unexpected transfer of power. The mantle of leadership falls to an elderly man, entirely unconnected to the Flavian Dynasty by blood or marriage. This man is Nerva, aged 61, who never sought power but has it thrust upon him in a desperate bid to save his own life from Domitian's threats. Historian Cassius Dio suggests Nerva has prior knowledge of the plot, for the Roman senate declares him emperor only hours after Domitian’s death. Dio recounts how Nerva, under threat from a paranoid Domitian, is approached by the conspirators and accepts the role of successor more to save his own life than out of ambition.
