My family has a lake-house in garret county and I have been fishing the Savage for quite a long time now. That hard navigation my friend comes from the slick algae-covered bottom, screwed soles are a must if you fish it on the regular! This river has two parts, all the native brook trout streams (known as the upper savage & are typically smaller creeks all within hiking distance) above the reservoir which provide easier fishing (CADDIS ALL DAY/ its also fun for the expert to hit if he's just looking for lots of fish) and the lower savage which is very wide and can be deceptive at times, home to smart/selective/trophy brown trout, and timely hatches of midges, quills, caddis, olives, etc. Nymphings also pretty hot, especially in the Spring & Fall And the best part is (besides the terrific scenery), this river isn't heavily fished so for me living 15 minutes down the road from it is pretty damn clutch (:

Screwed soles are a must. I have fallen into the Savage River more than any trout stream I have ever fished. Caught my biggest brownie out of the lower Savage, though, which makes up for all of the swimming.

Nice video dude! I have fished that same spot👍🏻 Just two small observations I made watching that! The first being that you need to get your fly line back on the reel and fight the fish from the rod and reel ;) and second is that I still don’t know why ppl think that pushing fish backwards and forwards helps them recover! Ever seen a fish swim backwards ? It just pushes water the wrong way over there gills and in doing so starves them still of oxygen! Just point them upstream and hold them gently until you feel them regain there strength please 👍🏻

holy hell, please handle fish more wisely. A fish like that shouldn't have needed to be revived like that nor fought that long.

Love fishing savage river. Didn't get to this year cause of coronavirus but I'll be back there next year.

Trout are feeding below the surface 90% of the time, which is why I mostly drift nymphs in the feeding channels. Sure, catching a fish on a dry is fun, but I'd rather catch more fish. Just my approach. :-)
