Today finally came when Wired Electric came out and installed a new engine into our 20KW Whole House Generator. The old engine had low compression on one cylinder. The generator was 2 years out of warranty. After calling Generac and sending them the serviceman's diagnose of the engine they deemed it "Manufacture Defect". The original warranty was 5 years. I had the generator 7 years. The new Generac Generators now carry a 7 year warranty. I got a call from Generac telling me they were going to cover the cost of a new generator. The serviceman worked on it from 11:30 to 3:45. He put oil in it and fired it up. It ran great. I ask him how long have he seen these generators run without stopping. He told me over 3 weeks when the power came back on. At that time you change the oil and filter and put it back in standby mode.

Going to a hybrid furnace that can run on the heatpump normal, and as a propane furnace when the grid is down would be something to consider long term as an upgrade. As well as depending on your power rate versus propane cost changing appliances over to propane. For normal grid running use. For me at $2 a gal for propane and $0.072 per kwh I'm breaking even. Compared to resistance electric on a stove top, dryer, hot water heater,.

Hi Justin, great that you are building a home. We also tried to put in a generator during our build but the home contractor delayed and delayed and ultimately we had to fire him for mis-management and alot of other issues. After we got an excellent builder to complete the home, we found out the generator contractor wanted to raise the price significantly for no reason, so, we cancelled it (2018). We decided back in 2000 after the massive ice storm while we lived in Hackett Arkansas when we had 11 days without power that we would get a generator if we moved to the country. Well, we researched companies and chose Alternative Power due to their reputation and pricing. Good luck to you both on your house plans... I hope it remains exciting and doesn't become a nightmare like ours did. Stay safe!

As an Army vet, I have a sincere desire to uncouple our dependence on foreign energy so we don't have to shed blood "in the economic interests of the US". I am very disappointed in the Biden policies on the pipeline and all the ramifications from their decision to stop it (job losses, US energy independence,, etc.). So disappointed.... we need to remain self sufficient. I guess that is why I'm doing what I'm doing at the micro level. Take care my friend!

I installed the 22W unit in 2020. We had cold weather in Texas the week of Feb 14. My Generac ran great for about 8 hours over a day and a half. It then stopped and we were without backup power for 2 days. No service available because of ice on the roads. The generator failed and had tons of oil all over the inside and leaking out on the outside. Disappointing to pay over 10K and have the unit fail the first time it's needed. It,s now the 22nd and they still haven't been able to get out to fix it, no doubt because of more urgent situations as our power was restored on the 17th. Great idea but to have it fail the first time it was needed is disappointing. I have no doubt this is a quality product but there's some flaw that rears it’s head during very cold weather. I'm anxious to hear from Generac how it can be avoided the next time the unit is needed in an emergency.
