Great post, CQ. My parents went on a vacation on a Gulfstar 50. They never talked about it. I assume they weren't used to being waited on, hand and foot. Dad always worked the halliards & winches on his custom boats: Raven, Vignette I & II, and Indra. :^) To sit idly by was alien to him. Although Mom didn't mind! She always said, "Watching boat racing is like watching the grass grow." To think how they lasted 60 years with 55 years in the same home, I attribute it to their devotion to their children. Few know that lesson these days. I pray all is well, CQ.

That is a lot of boat for the money. The changes done by the owner were on point and necessary. It is truly an impressive re-fit and I am glad you had so much enthusiasm in this video. I probably would have been the same, such an awesome boat. Though I would not consider a Gulfstar a blue water boat, the capsize screening and comfort ratio are not stellar but still safe and would make an incredible coastal cruiser/Caribbean cruiser. It is nice to see a center cockpit for a change.

@@malachy1847 You could cross the Pacific or Atlantic in a bathtub, it doesn't make a bathtub suitable for long distance and long term voyages. The term Blue Water boat gets tossed around quite a bit with no hard definition, depending on who you ask. My own definition falls more in line with Kretchmer's, yours may be different and that is OK. There are boats of all brands, lengths and construction techniques all over the world, they got there somehow. Fortunately humans have been building ocean going vessels for centuries and have an understanding of what works long term and safely and what works for nearer to shore sailing.

@NotOnYourLife

@@davecopp9356 No, I cannot, it must be looked at on a boat by boat basis with attention paid to her sailboat calculations and overall design. A boat designed to be a fast racer will probably not be suited to long distance travel where you need stability and ruggedness over speed. Do a KZitem search for "john kretschmer bluewater boats" or check out his books in the library. It is a lot to take in.

I've been toying with a similar design in my sketchbook. A 45' Center Cockpit Wishbone Ketch, I like the little pilothouse. She's got an 18 foot beam and 6' 8" ceilings in the interior. Its a more modern hull design with a vertical bow, and wider transom at 12 feet. The deck will be entirely straight and level fore to aft, at 7' above the waterline, but curving down as low as 6' on the sides. She'll be named the Unsightly if she ever leaves paper.

The gulfstar 50 ketch was the first big boat I got to sail on. Before that I only sailed 14 to 20 foot dinghies and day sailer. I am always looking for a gulfstar in good shape. I still remember that first night sail. We reefed down the seas build to 10 to 12 feet an on a broad reach we average 7 knots from st Croix to St. John’s arriving before dawn with a calm sea. I slept in that small cabin behind the navigation station. But it had a pair of bunks. I slept in the upper bunk and could go into the cockpit from my bunk through the access.

That's totally gorgeous Gulf Star. Many despite having a cultish following put up with lesser models for the sake of owning one. This is definitely one of their finest offerings complete with some serious work to make her more comfy. But to wind though, yeah well gentlemen never sail to weather so,,,,,,,,,I want something that kicks my ass to windward. Here's the thing though with this vessel, her 5.5' draft is a compromise without a center board. You can not beat her to death to windward. Oh my Lord how many cabin bulkhead tops have parted from the cabin over-head due to the oil canning of the hull and up lift to the cabin with a deep centerboard. Centerboards are great for moderate wind performance,,,,,,there is simply no doubt there. However when you over-extend your beating into like a 30 kt wind and are sleeping on the cabin sole for that few days you should have cracked off the wind a bit on too many deep centerboards you find your head bulkhead is no longer still fastened to the cabin top that heaved up. This issue of furniture is especially pronounced on vessels rounding the Horn. Hanging out in the Roaring 40s is one thing, just making a pass through is quite another in final rigging standards adopted to the boat owner. So,,,,,,,my ultimate question here would be,,,,,would you trust this boat at this price to sail the Horn West to East of course. Her upwind performance will not allow her to run the Horn East to West. That would just be stupid. BUT, how would she be running the Straights of Magellan East to West ya think? You really can use a center board to beat a boat to death ya know.

Captain Q - I wanna know if DINTY MOORE stew pays you to put a tin on every boat you examine? Hah! Seriously - I've sailed on a 1977 Gulfstar 50 quite a bit in the Pacific Northwest and they are great (and underrated) cruising boats. Gulfstar's quality control improved steadily from 1976 through 1986 - their patented teak joinery work was first class during that period. This particular boat looks like a great deal - the owner having upgraded nearly everything to "like new" condition.
