É o maior incensário do mundo.
THE BOTAFUMEIRO is the huge censer of the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. Currently is made of silver-plated brass, weighs 62 kg (empty), measures 1.60 m in height, and produces a lot of smoke. It is the largest censer in the world. The rope on which is suspended, attached to the cathedral cruise top, measures 65 meters, has 5 cm in diameter and weighs 90 kg. The “botafumeiro” is filled with coal and incense and is elevated and moved down the nave by a pulley mechanism. For moving it, a group of eight men, so-called "tiraboleiros", begin pushing it to put it in motion and then pull a cable attached to the lanyard to keep the pendulum speed. The movement can reach 68 km/h speed, making an arc of 65 meters and reaching a maximum height of 21 meters. To achieve this maximum height, it takes 17 complete routes. According to tradition, the use of the censer in the cathedral dates back to the eleventh century, aiming to perfume the church and eliminate the bad smell that the sweaty and dirty pilgrims left, many of them sick. A proof of the symbolic importance of “botafumeiro” in Spain is that it appears on the coins of five “pesetas” from 1993. The word "tiraboleiro" comes from the Latin "turifer" which means the one who carries incense.
