This is my personal opinion, I think the AR15/M16 should have originally been a 6mm/.243 projectile and not a 5.56/.223 projectile. I like the idea behind the 6mm ARC because I think the 6mm is the optimum antipersonnel intermediate rifle caliber.

.243 covers virtually every metric US battle rifles need. I've always wondered why they never adopted it.
@johnsmithfakename8422

@@BuckFoeJiden In my subjective opinion it was a matter of efficiency, and immediate problem solving at the expense of future proofing. The 5.56x45 did everything asked from it with the minimum amount of resources invested and expended. If you add to the fact that because of how NATO wanted their nation countries to carry the same ammo, this makes the 5.56x45 difficult to phase out. The initial M16 round was a 55 grain projectile going around 3300 FPS. The military knew that a small and high speed projectile can cause an exaggerated level of damage on target. The initial round could keep a projectile velocity of over 2200 FPS out to 300 yards (2200 FPS is the minimum velocity a projectile needs to cause the exaggerated amount of damage), and the recoil was mild enough that facilitated the ability for immediate follow up shots. In a firefight, seconds are minutes. In my subjective opinion the 5.56x45 is a very specialized round. It is a light weight cartage (This is off the top of my head but for 700 rounds of 5.56x45, you can carry around 300 rounds of 7.62x51), it can inflict "rifle style" damage on target at 300 yards, it has low recoil, the weapon was relatively light (which meant you could carry even more ammo for the weight of the previous weapon). 5.56x45's real problem is that it requires more work to be barrier blind and this is the 5.56x45's major drawback (the more current drawback is that it is defeated by cheap modern body armor. There are level 3 soft plates that can stop a 5.56x45 and they cost around $100 each. Meaning for around 300 dollars you can get concealable body armor that can stop a 5.56x45).
@BuckFoeJiden

@@johnsmithfakename8422 I mean, yes, to all of that. Ammo capacity is why the military went away from .308 to begin with. Imo it would make more sense to run a 80 grain FMJ .243 over 147 grain. 308s in LMGs. The fact that they're adopting 6.8s and 6.5 Creedmoor over the .243 for some of these weapons baffles the shit out of me lol. An m855-esque round designed around .243 would have every positive of m855 and none of the negatives at velocities of 3500 FPS+ Some lightweight. 243s break 4kfps. Don't get me wrong, I love my 5.56 rifles... but given my choice of any round to build a battle rifle around, it'd be .243.

@@BuckFoeJiden (I will say In my subjective opinion a lot because this is my belief based on my limited research) As much as I want to agree with you, I am going to have to disagree with the use of the .243 Winchester as a military cartage. It is my subjective opinion that the 6mm caliber makes for an optimal anti-personnel round as I consider it to be the sweet spot in projectile weight to accomplish the task. In my subjective opinion there are in essence 2 reasons why the .243 Winchester would not make for a good military cartage. 1 Compared to the 5.56x45 the .243 Winchester is a barrel burner. 2 It uses the small rifle action and the resulting rifle would weigh the same as the rifle they were trying to phase out. I spent too much time thinking about "What 6mm cartage could have replaced the 5.56x45." I came up with a 6mm cartage with around 1600 ft-lb of kinetic energy at the muzzle. This would be something along the lines of 75 gr @ 3100 FPS [OR 80 @ 3000 FPS, OR 87gr @ 2900 fps]. This is very similar to the new hotness round the 6mm ARC. This round in theory could satisfy the military's requirements at the time, extend the effective range, and improve barrier Blindness/penetration ... at the detriment of some ammunition capacity. If you want to find what I consider the best intermediate 6mm cartage concept, there is an article on the subject called "6mm Optimum."
@BuckFoeJiden

@@johnsmithfakename8422 nah you make good points man. The only thing I'd argue is that .243 is only slightly larger than your 6mm bullets. My thinking is that with a faster, more accurate round, you'd ultimately have to fire less rounds. Sometimes I forget how abysmal the Army's marksmanship training was. 😆 I'd still kill to see a .243 in an LMG configuration. Especially with something like an 80gr light armor penetrator.
