I need to come shop in your neck of the woods! Prices are better than here in Wisconsin! As a side note, when I make potato soup and it needs to thicken it, rather than using flour or corn starch, I keep on hand envelopes of Idaho brand mashed potatoes and I will sprinkle in that a little at a time till it reaches the thickness I want! Try it!

When done and ready to serve we always serve it over fritos or tortilla chips crushed up,cover the chips with chili,then cover the chili with shredded cheese,sour cream and cilantro on top. I also serve cornpone with it as a side. Cornpone is cornbread with corn in the batter and then bake in a cast iron skillet in a 400 degree oven!

Good tip on the potato, they just love light. So what we did was take a nice clean shipping box and put our 10 lbs in it and it sits on top of another solid box, keep stuff off the cement floor. and I have a tea towel over the folded top. Our potatoes are quite fresh and are far enough away from the Onions not to go rotten. We have the onions nesting in a box with a box lid that fits over it and it has holes n the box, we keep the clean dried skins in there too. that helps keep the onions from going soft. I wash off my onions as i peel them with a paring knife if they may have mold in the top layers. Yes sometimes they do go soft, but we really go through a lot of onions per month, about 5 pounds or more. Apples, Onions and potatoes should not be neighbors when storing them. just a tip

I saw a tip, from another KZitem channel she used corn starch or flour, to sop up the grease without using a paper towel to remove the grease, stirred it in and it made it thicker, sopping up the grease. Thanks for all that you do Maria.
@MealsWithMaria
2 жыл бұрын
I like that! If you don’t like the extra fat in general, I can see not wanting to do that but to include the natural animal fat for nutrients and calories without it being oily, this is a good tip!
@mangopilar

@@pennasylvania it absorbs the fat and makes it thicker into a sauce.
@tjbyrd
Жыл бұрын
@@MealsWithMaria, Keep in mind sopping up the animal fat or grease with flour or cornstarch would be the same as making a roux or a slurry to thicken gravies and/or sauces with, which means it would thicken whatever mixture you're going to be Incorporating it back in to. I use a turkey baster instead of paper towels to pull up the excess grease out of the pan with and just put the grease in an empty can, bowl or mug until it cools then throw it away, unless it's bacon grease, I always save bacon grease for future uses. When using a turkey baster, first place your can or whatever your going to be putting the grease in to as close as possible to the pan, tip the pan so the grease will all run to one side then, once it's filled with grease, hold the turkey baster upside down or at least on its side at enough of an angle to prevent the grease from running back out the open end of it until you have it situated directly over whatever you're going to be putting the grease in to then turn it right side up. Otherwise the grease will run out of the open end of the baster all over your stove. It sounds complicated but it really isn't, it just takes a little practice and it works really well and also prevents having to waste paper towels. Just use caution and be extra careful not to spill hot grease all over your stove. Happy Thanksgiving! 😀

ONLY add cornstarch or flour in it to soak up the fat if you’re going to make a rue or going to add a liquid to it. To get the grease out of it just make a circle in the middle of the pan and put a paper towel in there it’ll soak it all up. 😊

Yes as mentioned by Nakita heavy cream will work also I've seen chowder made with eithier sour cream or Greek yogurt..... You could also in a skillet just melt some butter (or you can use reserved bacon grease) and whisk it together with some flour to form a roux. Then whisk in a can of evaporated milk. And once the mixture comes to a simmer, it will thicken up into a really thick gravy-like mixture. Add that to directly to the slow cooker, and give everything a stir. 💜💜💜

Im so glad you mentioned the green potato thing lol That potato soup looked so good and had me thinking I could drop some of that left over Christmas ham in it Oh yummm ! I have to admit Im kind of scared when it comes to what would seem to be spicy or Indian foods mainly because with finances so tight and food cost so high I cant risk financially trying something new only to find I have wasted money on ingredients that we cant eat and was wondering if perhaps others are the same way? I love how you pulled all your left over and or partial fragments and made a wonderful meal with it and I believe several persons can benefit from those examples. thank you!!

I'm the same way. I tried a new recipe last week and it was awful. I ended up throwing it out. Never again.

All recipes look delicious Maria. I have a question. What do you do with the rest of the can of tomato paste ? I dislike opening a can of tomato paste just to use 1 or 2 tablespoons.

At 27:11 You could thickened your homemade barbecue sauce in the instant pot. Did you mean 4 Tablespoons of cumin, you used a teaspoon in beef barbaco?

the prices you quote are so cheep. here in Canada are about double :(

Yes, probably more than double the price here in Québec. The cheapest for taco seasoning is 1,29$ CDN an enveloppe. 38 cents is definitely a bargain! But I now buy it in 300g format or I make the mix myself, lol

FYI. You can use any fat to make a roux, so next time, reserve the beef grease and use that!
