I am not sure of a definite answer here. Firstly I don't know what you mean by homemade mud. If its clay from your surroundings, then I am guessing firing might be needed. If it comes in contact with water wouldn't disintegrate?

Hello ma'am...I have query 1)Reason behind the breakage of jewellery after properly baked..Which causes the jewellery breakage? 2)Have you experienced this kind of problems?
@rutujadandekar5622
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Neha I am from Mumbai . Since you have expertised in this particular field I would like to ask you one question . From past two three years I have been buying terracotta jewellery from exhibitions .I just love the designs so much but unfortunately the pieces have been buying are so fragile that they tend to break easily . The wire loop connecting with the clay piece gets detached easily . Why does this happen and how can I prevent it ? Also how to choose good strong piece of jewellery while shopping in such exhibitions?
@nehagopinathpillai
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rutuja, Sorry that your experience with Terracotta jewellery hasn't been very good so far. Being made from clay, they can be fragile. So typically when sold, the vendor must inform you about the pros and cons. But with regard to the nichrome wire, that mostly shouldn't happen if the jewellery is fired well. Typically when clay is fired well, it shrinks. This in-turn helps the clay grab on to the wire even more. But sometimes when people use thinner gauge wires or any other material apart from nichrome or kanthal, it may fall off. As a customer, you can always enquire with the vendor on the process they follow. You can ask them the post product care info and they must be able to help you with that information. Hope this helps.

@nehagopinathpillai
4 жыл бұрын
Certainly! So the workshop was brief - it was a pair of earrings and a necklace. But post that I learnt a lot separately from my sir. I also went for a brief sculpting class before doing terracotta jewellery. That's how I knew I was interested in clay. But my learning has been a continuous process. I met other artists who did their education specializing in ceramics in both India and abroad. They gave me some more insight on working with clay. After coming to US, I enrolled at a local community College to pursue my ceramics course this year (8 months - 2 semesters) but unfortunately due to Covid the college is currently closed we aren't having any online sessions as this had to be hands-on. To me this isn't a hobby, so I would typically look at all possible ways to improve. That's been my journey so far :)

Hello! The clay shouldn't be too soft or too hard. It has to be pliable enough to work it into the shape you desire, and shouldn't be so hard that it cracks easily. Once you start working with clay, one should ideally get the hang of it.

Glad you find our videos useful. To your questions: - What paints do you use and do you dilute them or apply it thick? - varnish you can try these products inIndia: bit.ly/2ChWDlj - Matt (India) bit.ly/3fLfjrd - Glossy (India) - Pricing should be based on your material cost , labor firing charges, packaging and shipping. You can also compare it with other terracotta brands to get an average.

@@subaganesan2511 okay! I was very happy with the results fevicryl acrylic paints provided. How do you fire your work?usually if your work isn't fired well, there could be some amount of moisture in your pendant. That can lead to poor absorption of the paint. That can lead to longer drying time. So back to my question - how do you fire your work?

@@nehagopinathpillai I follows sand method for baking.. first I put layer of sand and placing my work on it then cover it by thin layer of sand, over that I sprinkle some coconut shells and charcoals mam..

How do you preserve your terracotta jewellery... Or store your terracotta jewellery??
@nehagopinathpillai
4 жыл бұрын
Usually in a zip lock or cover it with a simple soft cloth. I have little cards in which I hook the earrings. For the necklace I use a bigger zip lock or a cloth and lay it out flat. Some pieces have individual boxes. I never mix them up with other kinds of jewellery and never stack them one on top of the other unless there is a layer of cloth or plastic in between.
