Great review. Helpful. But I have to ask...Is it really so cold in your house that you need to wear a Rab mountaineering down jacket? Haha! Nice coat though! I'd like to see a review on that!

Nice review but I would like to share my opinion as to why you see SD Card readers on many devices vs other standards. The SD standard is the most widely used removable media standard on the planet. I'm using 5 new bodies and all take SD. Even my A9 and the new A7R's take SD media. The card speeds have increased dramatically over the years. We are currently at version 6.0 of SD storage with theoretical read/write speeds up to 624 MB/s. Gen 7.0 is under development with hypothetical speeds up to 1970MB/s. Currently an A9 only has a max write of 150MB/s so there is plenty of headroom in the current protocol alone for many years to come. The amount of PCI lanes dedicated to the socket is much more important to many as speeds vary from USB 2.0 up to PCI 4X. A speed test of the socket would be very beneficial as not one review has tested this. I use Thunderbolt 3 card readers but as this does not support that the onboard speed is even more critical. XQD was mainly adopted by Nikon for use in the Consumer market. Nikon took a gamble using the XQD cards and unfortunately for Nikon shooters they're on the loosing end. XQD was also short lived in the Commercial video market. XQD is an obsolete format that has been abandoned by the CFA as of Sept. 2016. Development has ceased along with production by the few manufactures that actually made the cards. Sony is the only company still manufacturing XQD media under its own name and also for Lexar. It has been superseded by CFexpress which is intended for video recording. CFexpress media is going into production the third quarter of this year.

Yep SD is getting better all the time, but why would you need to remove it from your device to take information. WIth USB3 and USB c transfers are fine. If the SD slot on this device allowed it to finish flush then sure, nice storage add-on, but it does not. Why!!? I wish they had added a micro SD reader to the tablet side. Good info on the XQD, Cheers

For my uses SD cards are swapped frequently during shoots. We fill 8-15 cards at an event. Sometimes my assistant will download a card to check color etc. To swap them into the camera and pull the data that way would require the camera to be running and it's just not practical as we use different bodies at the same time. Installing a card from a Sony body into a Panasonic or even another Sony model risks data loss and formatting issues. I do realize that this issue is likely only limited to photographers but this machine is marketed towards professionals. I agree that manufacturers should implement flush SD sockets. Many devices from Samsung and Asus used to but they stopped as well. When I've asked that question at CES I was always told it was not a purchase priority for buyers. Most are nothing more than a plug in dongle since they are running off the USB bus and struggle to transfer over 20MB/s I suspect they throw it in more as a selling feature. IMO manufacturers don't want to make additional storage convenient since they charge a massive premium. In Microsofts case the ram and storage prices are high profit options. As far a micro SD the last Apple release I went to they stated removable storage pulls the system down as they consume resources and operate at a slow speed. I think more options are always better and it should be up to the user. People should contact the manufacturers and let them know what they would like. From my time with the 13" and 15" SB2 my recommendations to Microsoft were: 1) Increase the power supply for the 15" as rendering pulled from the battery. Make the mains cord longer. 2) Thunderbolt 3 support 3) Offer a 13" with active cooling on the CPU and a 1060. 4) 1 USB port on the tablet 5) Less bounce from the hinge 6) Fix the palm rejection issue when using the pen, it causes lines to wobble. With your hand off the screen lines are crisp. 7) Include the pen, people are spending decent money Despite the nitpicking it is one of the best Windows machines on the market.

Hey fella, first of all, great review! About the SD I dont know man, I mean... I have several cameras and its all about SD's. To me is easier to exchange SD's than carry cables or one cable. But hey, thats me. Cheers!

The faster the card is working, the faster it gets corrupt. I had UHSII cards and they did quite quickly. Never again I will allow data loss on these!

You are lucky, i bought Surface Book 2 15" 512gb on the day it came out, I had blue screens within the first month, MS replaced it, then the new one lasted 3 month again blue screens, MS replaced it again, 4 month later battery stopped charging. eventually i gave up and demanded MS to refund me. this laptop is great for we browsing and doing your typical surface stuff, the moment you start doing heavy things, it deteriorates within months. PS high end cameras are not going away from SD cards, its the cheap crap that is. on my sony camera 1 raw image is around 300mb, I will die transferring it wireless, so new laptops without SD slots are very annoying for pro photographers

I use it on my lap all of the time and there isn't really any noticeable wobble. If you're trying to write with the pen, just detach it and write with it in your hand. Lap wobble is not a problem (though a bit worse than on a table).

For the next Surface Book 3, Microsoft needs to pull an Apple and get rid of USB A ports, add a couple more USB C ports, even better, have 2 USB C ports on each side. Get rid of the SD card reader, most professionals probably use multi-function hubs or docks nowadays thanks to Apple, ironically... Keep the magnetic charging port though. I can't stress enough the number of times I snagged the power cable. Also the tablet needs one USB C port and a magnetic charging port as well. That kind of versatility will be unrivalled! Also the keyboard needs multimedia controls and the power button needs to be separate and have an optional fingerprint scanner integrated. I think that's about it. 😶

Paul-Sebastian Manole awful suggestion to get rid of the much needed ports. No I won't run around with an arsenal of adapters to be able to attach my devices. The sd slot is perfect for storage extension, it can get up to extra 2tb on it. Go to Apple if you want 0 ports and leave actual working people on their own device.
