A few weeks ago as the sun had shifted , some of my orchids got sunburned. All have recovered and had minimum leaf loss but now weem to be doing fine, except for 1 which has lost all but 3 tiny new leaves. It also has the remains of a flower spike that I had trimmed back except for 3 buds which were swelling and looked like they might grow a kikki or another stem. This spike still has the buds that look healthy, and the spike itself is still green and strong. I don't know whether to cut it off and see if the tiny leaves will grow more quickly, or whether to leave the spike there and treat the whole thing exactly as I would if I were trying to save baby orchid. (that is how I've gotten most of my orchids - buying them when they were on sale at Walmart because they had lost their blooms and generally been neglected - and most of them have responded well with repotting and more attentive care.) This is the first time I have had to deal with sunburn.

I bought a new orchid 4 weeks ago. It had 2 flowers with 4 more buds in different stages and a vast root system. After repotting it and cutting some of the dead roots, one more flower bloomed, and then it started to show signs of stress. The next flower didn’t fully open, and after a week it started wilting. I didn’t expect the flowers to last, due to the repotting, and seeing how the stem started to yellow and the others flowers to sag, I thought they’ll all be gone soon. What I didn’t expect was to see one of the leaves to start turning yellow. I decided to take it out of its pot today and check the roots, and found almost all of them were dead. Now I have maybe a root and a half which are in questionable condition. I cut the dead ones as best as I could, and also cut the flower stem down to a half point to help the orchid save energy. I replaced the potting mix and replanted it. I’m expecting the yellow leaf to die out, but I hope I managed to save the orchid. Not sure what happened there.

That explains why one of the sunburned orchids I bought is probably going to lose another leaf. Hopefully, it'll grow another one before this next one falls so it will have more than 1 leaf to grow new roots with. One of the leaves was so damaged I cut it off before watching any of these videos. We'll see what it does. The other $2 rescue mini phalaenopsis has one sunburned leaf and two healthy leaves. The mini phalaenopsis that lost two leaves and was severely underwatered was in bark. While the other mini phalaenopsis was very dry but was in pure sphagnum so it still had a little dampness around the largest root. Both were on clearance for $2 and were sunburned from the hot desert sun. I bought both of them on May 26, 2023 and they're still alive almost 3 weeks later. I do see signs that the aerial roots are growing on both orchids. Hopefully that progress will continue. I'm very new to orchids.

Thank you for such fabulous explanations. We received a phalaenopsis as a gift for watching a friend's dog about 4 years ago. My wife cut the stem at the base after it had finished flowering and it's never grown a new stem. A few months ago, I took over care of the plant, changed the orchid medium and feed it each week. I also found a spot for it in the window, but after a few months, have noticed that two of the bottom leaves are quite yellow. The roots are a healthy green and I spray them with water a few times each day. Will the yellow leaves turn back to green or should I just consider them as older leaves that naturally die off? We have 5 green, 1 yellow-green and 1 yellow leaf.

Hello. Not sure how to reach you, so I'll ask here. I have a phaleonapsis orchid that I've had about 4 yrs. It was in bloom when I got it. It never bloomed again. It started growing like crazy. It had roots everywhere. Then it developed a keike. I was afraid to cut it off, but I did. I think I missed a leaf from from the keike, it yellowed and fell off. It was on top. I had never transplanted it, so I did so at this time. Probably a big mistake. Little by little, the other leaves fell off. I have one yellow leaf left. I lost a lot of roots and it fell out of the bark medium. I cut the dead roots and was waiting for it to dry out before repotting or trying water culture to grow roots hopefully. The keike leaves are thin and limp. I spray the medium and the roots with water. Any ideas? Can either be saved? AND THE LAST LEAD CAME OFF. It's probably dead. Still have some roots though.

Thank you very informative. I had a dendrobium noble. It was beautiful. The bloom was over. Then all the leaves turned yellow and fall off. I throw it away. Because I thought it was dead. If you believe your orchid has developed root or stem rot, do you ever recommend removing and replacing growing medium? I have a Phalenopsis orchid which has an entire leaf that is turning yellow, located at the bottom of the stem. It lost its blooms about two weeks ago. I trimmed the spikes back. Some of the roots look almost black. Do you recommend replacing the growing medium? It is currently in spagnum moss.

I’m so confused. I bought an orchid it was sitting in wet tightly packed moss and I brought it home reported it and the blooms stayed on plus three new buds stayed on and one started opening but one leaf was trapped between two leaves and then all of a sudden that leaf started turned yellow and has a brown area in the middle like dead dried leaf brown and it’s a big Phal or the blooms are large. It had 7 leaves and the bottom 4 were small and the very top two are larger. But I can see 4 of the bottom leaves have leathery patches on the bottom and have a tint of yellow and I’ve been watching it and making sure it gets watered when it starts drying out and I bought everything from repot me and I’m still having issues. Im just a bad orchid mom. I want to keep them happy and healthy so badly I bought grow lights for the shelf my orchids sit on this one has many nice healthy roots the crown isn’t black idk why all these leaves look like this.

Hi, I'm not sure there's anything you can do if all leaves are compromised, other than wait it out. Maybe the orchid will find a healthy place on the stem to produce a keiki, or grow new leaves from the crown if it's not damaged. Hang on to it, good luck!

That exactly happened to some of my plants also, where a mealybug infestation in the crown started rotting new leaf tissue they fed on intensely, plus I applied a liquid biological insecticide that sealed the sad fate of the phals. Look at the mealybugs clustered inside the brown stems of this video at 21:20 in the section on crown and stem rot. This consequence of mealybug infestation makes mealybugs a life and death situation for indoor plants, as we found out…

Hi, well I like to think I popularized the use of hydrogen peroxide with orchids many years ago, so yeah, I heard a thing or 2 🤣 ok so hp is a sanitizer, it cannot treat per say, it can sanitize. Since it can also dsstroy cells we also use it when we want to purposely damage tissue to seal it, like in the case of cuts, or crown rot. I also use it against snail infestations. But hp is not a treatment, it's not systemic and does't heal anything. It's just useful in certain situations. Virus infections have no known cure sadly 😊
