I've been hearing that for decades, yet millions of people still live in big cities or just outside of them. A suburb that grows too much becomes just like a big city. I'd rather have a 20min drive to work than a 2 hour drive from a rural area like one of my co-workers does, who is always complains about his long drive to and from work.
@danndeelion
2 жыл бұрын
This is very true. A lot of people STILL CANT work from home and of course a lot of those jobs are right in the city or way out of rural neighbourhoods. We live in a suburb and my partner cannot work from home due to his office job and still drives 45 min to 1+ hours a day to and from work. What about people in jobs working in hospitals etc? People are being FORCED out of the city by the insane housing prices (Vancouver BC in Canada being one of the worst), even "cheaper" rural properties here are at least $1m. Its hard to find houses in the entire province of BC for less than $250k.

And add into that the gas bill. Previously when I lived in suburbs I had to tank at least 3 to 4 times per month. Nowadays I live in city center, everything I do is more time efficient and also I tank only once per month. Great saving on time and money. Suburbs are overrated.

I moved from the big city to small-town America as a retiree. When my husband died I moved back to the city. What I found out was services for older persons was much more readily available in the city than it was in a small town. I also found that I would not be as car-dependent as I was in the hinterland. Urban crime is a concern for an older person but truth be told city crime tends to occur in the same neighborhoods...i.e. poor neighborhoods. If you have the finances to avoid those areas you can be just as safe as in a less populated location.

Last year I moved out from my family house in the suburbs into the city center. Didn't regret a bit. Yesterday I returned from my Christmas at my mother's place and it reminded me why living in suburbs 25 km from city is bad. It's far from work, everday you spend even more time in traffic jam than you would in the urban area, whatever you do you got to get in the car in order to reach the place, no entertainment nearby, plus the cost of living is not lower compared to the city center - it's actually the opposite; it's more quiet? Not at all. Where I lived it was only 3 minutes from the traffic lights, so oftentime people speed up when the green light shows and it's actually more stressful than living now i the city, where I have a 50 km/h limitation. Only plus is the air quality is better in rural areas.

Absolutely truth video. I used to live in small city in UK and I moved in London. After 6 months of living here I realised that a big cities not for me. It’s just to noisy and crowded. I always feel here anxiety and stress. I just think like what I’m doing here, all my friends living in different city. For past a few months Ive got some problems with my sleep and health due depression and overthinking about my decision to move in big city for «better life». I guess I just wanted to proof myself that I can take that risk and improve my life by moving into big city for opportunities and better life. But since I moved I always feel just depression and anxiety. I feel very lonely here not gonna lie… I’m thinking to move back but i feel if I do that then it will be considered as a fail and giving up. I don’t really know what to do. I don’t wanna feel like I’m loser, came into big city to improve myself and then just gave up and back again into small city.

I live in a VERY Rural area. I live in the upper midwest in the US and I live ALONE. I have an intense work schedule which if you include commute times it can be 12 to 14 hours a day. I've been doing it for 15 months now and want to move to a big city. I liked living in the rural area at first, but the "honeymoon period" wore off and realize that I would rather live near family. This move would not have been so bad had I been partnered or had a spouse, but with my intense work schedule and lack of amenities, I need to live in a more urban setting. I am making a plan to downsize and liquidate my assets (houses and cars) and relocate to an area that suits me better.

Your points are interesting and well-argued, however they are over-generalisations. For instance, some urban neighbourhood have more community spirit than some suburbs. I'm thinking a little in stereotypes here, I realise, but compare the close packed terraced houses where people chat over the back yard wall and have a local pub or working men's club just down the road with suburbs where there are no pedestrian areas, no social venues except maybe a gym and everyone "minds their own business"-except for complaining about each other to the homeowners' association! A small urban borough within a large metropolitan area can act as its own small town.

Of course you always need sources to everything nowadays but you really don't if you are receptive. Fun fact: The word Police comes from Latin. And what does Polis mean in Latin? - City... Yeah. Big cities suck. I am happy I can work remote from my home in a small town in the U.S. I lived in Austin, Texas for seven years. I had some good times, but ultimately it got crazy expensive. The cost of living there quickly trumped the cities charm. I would never go back. It is too big and too spread out. The traffic is bad. The east side of Austin is crappy while the west side is nice, which is lame. Ideally, a city should have equally good amenities no matter what part of the city you live in. I could would have moved to west Austin if I could have afforded it. The problem with having better parts of a city, is those parts become too expensive for everyone else.

Living in the suburbs outside the city limits is not really a "done with big cities" attitude. The suburbs are where you go once you get married and start having kids and need a more family oriented lifestyle but you still want and need the accessibility and choices!! Shopping, dining, hotels, spas....etc.... . But I will never live the rural life. Ever. Too many ignorant hicks and Jesus bullshit. In the cities you know which areas are dangerous that you need to say out of. In rural areas... meth/oxy heads are EVERYWHERE. You WILL get ripped off. I have been ripped off more in rural areas than I ever was in the cities. And by people you know.

Do you know a lot of New Yorkers who keep talking about the fact that they want to leave, but never do?” New York is the new model for the new concentration camp, where the camp has been built by the inmates themselves, and the inmates are the guards, and they have this pride in this thing that they’ve built-they’ve built their own prison-and so they exist in a state of schizophrenia where they are both guards and prisoners. And as a result they no longer have-having been lobotomized-the capacity to leave the prison they’ve made or even to see it as a prison.” Quote from the movie, My dinner with Andre (1981)

#16 - politics in the cities have always been atrocious and are now getting even worse. I lived in NJ and commuted to NYC for work - could never live there (working was zero problem) - it was suffocating at best.

LOL, I find that hysterical because I'm originally from a major city suburb and now I live in the rural ring around a medium city and politics are so much worse because of past President Trump. The amount of people who you can tell are just fucking nuts is more apparent than ever. We have gun shops that post Let's go Brandon as a marketing ploy on their huge road side signage. People in cities might have a poster in their window but I've never seen 30 flags in a yard depicting a president as Rambo or riding a dinosaur. Which is particularly galling as these people all take federal money for their farming.

@@ymeynot0405 I just drove from LA to KC MO and back again. Rural America is so HORRIBLE on every level. One dead town after the next after the next.... and oil pumps....and grain silos..... I have no idea how anyone survives there. Pile and piles of dead rusted out cars and appliances spanning back to 80's. There is no removal of anything. Oh and of course..... JESUS AND TRUMP shit everywhere. Just looking at how they live is a pretty good deterrent from their religion and their politics.
