"women choose to" should read "women are expected to", to be more precise about where the motivation comes from. I think you are quite right that the wage gap is largely fueled by cultural expectations. We cannot say that women are naturally more nurturing when culture is is demanding them to be nurturing whether they want to or not. It's only when we remove this pressure that we see the actual difference between the proverbial nature versus nurture.
@robertschmitt7253
4 жыл бұрын
Melora Carabas well if you look at the Scandinavian countries, which are the most developed ones when it comes to equality, most nurses are still female and most engineers are male. In fact it is proven that the more egalitarian a country is, the bigger the differences get between the genders in the job choice. Women in poorer countries get a degree in the stem fields a lot more often than women in Scandinavia do. Because in progressive and richer countries people choose jobs they are interested in while people in poorer countries want to earn as much money as they can. I think it‘s just nature. It makes sense that women would be more nurturing in nature since they carry children and bear them. It makes sense that men have a protective instinct since they are on average bigger and stronger. It‘s an evolutionary thing. Women tend to be more interested in people and men usually are more interested in things.

One more psychological facts, in general is men are more interested in thing while women are more interested in People . YOU CAN NOT ELIMINATE NATURE. EVEN SOCIETY IS IN A WAY IT IS DUE TO NATURE. OUR NATURE IS NOT THE PRODUCT OF SOCIETY BUT OUR SOCIETY IS A PRODUCE OF OUR NATURE .

As society get more egalitarian , gender difference between men and women increases rather than decrease. And who told you woman care more about children due to society exception . It's nature . Opportunity.... You mentioned that women are less likely to be aggressive in the work place, whether it's being competitive on the job or demanding higher pay. My question is, has anyone considered why? I have seen women being told and been told myself NOT to be that way by male superiors. It seems that perhaps men (and women) are so accustomed to men being more dominant in the workplace that when a woman asserts herself it is frowned upon and discouraged (by both men and women). I agree with a great number of the points that were made in your video, but let's not discount or omit the fact that there is a cultural barrier that needs to be broken still. I'm not referring to the hiring bias that was mentioned (which doesn't really balance out since more men do hiring than women), but the professional work environment in general, and how women are expected to conduct themselves in it. Great points were made. These lessons need to be taught to girls from childhood. Thanks for sharing.
@87mrsaba

Sarah Parker after reading your whole comment I believe the one problem is............... you said women are being told that's the key word told. Everybody have there on decision making brain. If you want more if you want a better position you cannot let that hire up tell you to be a certain way because you will forever be in that same position if you do not be aggressive and try to be more. Most people in power position are doing whatever it takes to keep their power position and doing whatever it takes not for them to leave and go to another competitor so most people in power position give you enough just to stay there but give you less do you need to grow. It takes you as a person to step up and tell yourself and make yourself be aggressive be more demanding
@alux
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sarah, we did mention that there is still a small preferential biased towards people of the same gender, but it doesn't account for even 1% in pay difference (from what we were able to find). In addition, most of the hiring in companies is done by Women (HR is usually female). We agree that some mentalities need to change, it's just that we think both parties should do it, not just one. It's all about the equality of opportunity, not the equality of outcome. Thank you for being an Aluxer!

It was very informative and definitely eye opening. I agree that women often make worse career decisions than men, which impact their earnings. On the other hand, it is equally important to understand where ‘working less hours’ ‘taking more holidays’ ‘working less dangerous jobs, etc are coming from. The university data you have referred to screams to me that it is an outcome of girls’ upbringing being different to boys as they are not being seen as capable to work more scientific professions as boys. Instead, girls are expected to play with dolls and prepare for the role of being a mother one day. This is what the society imposes on women and that’s a fact. Please don’t forget that woman who decide to have a family often does lot of unpaid work: she looks after the kids, does cleaning and cooking as well as earn money. There is data available on how much that unpaid work actually cost. Also due to having family, women are more likely to choose seasonal, part-time, 0 hour jobs, which are simply more flexible but pay less.

Men are by default entrepreneurs. Businessmen. Just take a look at the history: It has always been men who hunted, built, constructed, went *out there* . Looking for the pattern, the transcension. Women have typically been the *caring* force, the *social* force. Hence the distinction: pattern on one hand, and matter on the other: pattern means paternal - father - male (That's why God is male in most religions) and matter means mother - maternal. That's why the earth is considered "Mother Earth" - the world of the matter, of things. While men typically implement & extend their manhood (literally their penis) in (church) towers, pyramids, or venture up mountains, or tote guns (no matter where on the world - young boys will always play with toy guns, it's in no case a "social construct") women stay on the earth, down, being suppliers, being the 'glue' of all people, doing social work, but also the receivers. The man extends himself, the woman gives herself. That's why men generally build and fly planes, and why women are so much into helping others, listening, feeling ("what's the *matter* ?") The points in this video confirm that. *This never means* that someone who is male acts exclusively as a male and vice versa: generally speaking all men possess a female bit and all women possess a male bit. Think of the yin yang symbol. And this explains the perfect harmony of this planet.

Sports people are paid based on the crowds that they atttract. Men in the top of their sport usually get paid more because more men are interested in sports than women.

I think there are two main reasons why: 1. Kids: This is why some Women: - Don't take dangerous jobs that are well paid. - Work less hours than men. - Enter the workplace later than men. 2. Discrimination Let's be honest there are less chances that a woman gets a job instead of a man for example for a driving position like a bus or an airplane. But I don't believe we are less competitive than men, ask less money for a Job, ask less for a raise, take vacations more than men, or prioritize earnings as high as men do. I mean, It makes no sense at all. We all would like to have more money and vacations equally.

1- women specialize in fields that pay less than men 2- women enter the work force later than men 3- women work fewer hours than men 4- women are less competitive than men. They want to be liked than to win. 5- women ask for less money when getting a new job. Négociate your salary aggressively. They should know your worth in advance. 6- women are less likely to as for a raise than men 7- women do not prioritize earnings. Careless about friendship 8- women vacation more often 9- women are more likely to leave work 10- After the first child women scale back on work 11- women choose to dedicate more time to the children than men 12- women retire on average earlier 13- women work less dangerous jobs 14- US doesn’t offer paid maternity leave 15- gender discrimination still a real thing 16- the more agreable you are the less you earn Opportunity !!!! ❤️

I believe it's fair to say they make less money due to the list of choices they have available to him that men don't have as well as the list of priorities but overall that if you can have someone else go and do all that work and then still support you in the end it makes a difference

A lot of these differences, although accurate [This video is true!], are due to differences in values that little girls get taught, versus little boys. This is true even in the same family, no joke. Sometimes it's very blatant. My parents did me a real disservice in that my father would out-and-out tell me, "You're a girl. 'x' isn't appropriate for you." My mother would be complicit by not saying anything to the contrary or not correcting him, but just being silent. As little girls, we get told things like, "Math is hard," (remember that scandal with the Barbie dolls?) and hokum like we should aspire to be mothers and look for a husband to support us. (Boy! Has that one been out-dated for decades!) We get pressured to be accommodating and to put others ahead of our own needs. We get told that we're 'pretty', but hardly ever that we're really smart. (Get the message?) We get told to get along above all. We get told to be forgiving, even to the jerk who puts us in tears regularly because we're out building a career, not making our world revolve around him. (I divorced that clown when he pulled that - Fast! Well, a lot of mistakes were made in marrying him in the first place. Lessons learned.) We get shamed for being assertive on the excuse that it is 'rude' to disagree openly with anyone who is 1) male, 2) earns more money than us, 3) or has a job higher up the ladder than us / makes more money. That can be everybody at times. I specifically remember that there have been several times when I knew more than the other person through studying a subject for years, but because he was male and made more money (regardless of the fact that he did _not_ have my experience,) my mother would scold me and say, "Now, he knows what he's doing." My father would be more blunt. "You just pipe down and butt out!" This applied even when I had two years of engineering studies under my belt, versus the person disagreeing with me, who had no engineering background, but considered himself an expert and was telling me that he was just as competent at programming, when he didn't even know one computer language. (I knew 5 at the time.) Nor did he even work in the field. I'm actually not complaining, though I do get mad at times. I'm just saying that the messages that little girls are given is a huge factor, and this is exactly what needs to be overcome. BTW, I'm now working in the Film Industry, and married to a retired engineering professor who actively bows to the knowledge and skills I've bothered to cultivate to be in this business. He doesn't even pretend to know more about what makes a great story than I do, think he can 'read' people better than I do (there's an awful lot of psychology in this business,) or fancy himself better than me at any of the myriad skills you need to be here. He knows better. He bows to my years of experience over his zero experience when it comes to this business. So things ~can~ get better. Opportunity.

You're great at presenting anecdotal evidence. I'd suggest to present statistical evidence to steel man your arguments. This video only present 15 reasons but there are at least 25 different reasons (as outlined by Warren Farrel) why men outearn women.
@nethanialal5619

The whole reason boils down to this particular thing we overlook so much. The toys we make our kids like. What I mean by that is giving a baby doll as a gift to a baby girl. She is then excited by the concept of babies and princes and totally forgets about her purpose in life
@Gaonaism

@@nethanialal5619what you're describing is a social constructionist reason. Men and women also differ biologically - in various dimensions. No true reasonable person would ever claim that there was a uni-dimensional reason for our differences.

This just proves to me that we need societal change. Not that women are given less direct OPPORTUNITY, but women are socialized to most of these things and legislated to a few others which ends with them making less.
