I do think one mistake people often make is getting a very small kitten (or puppy) when there are young children in the house. If you have toddlers around, the risk to the kitten of accidental injury is very high. Adopting a gentle, older cat is the way to go rather than having a fragile, tiny kitten around boisterous children.

I've been a cat lover for most of 70 years and I find that gentle treatment of and respect for cats works well. They're far from stupid and emotionally remote; they just keep things inside. My last cat was a perfect black beautiful American Tabby/Persian mix. He had the markings of a Tabby -- white fur under his chin and a large white patch on his belly -- but with unusually long, shiny fur. I could tell tales about this remarkable being but mostly I enjoyed his intense curiosity and camaraderie.

I recently realized I was feeding my cats the wrong food, I'm really glad your video pointed to what I should be looking for in my cats food. I have 2 cats, and fortunately I never had to introduce them because they're sisters. Getting multiple cats from the same litter seems like a good choice since they'll have a lifelong friend. I have learned a lot about having a cat and a kitten through experience. I would advise everyone who wants a cat to do their research before hand so they know what they’re getting themselves into. A lot of other mistakes I would add is flowers and plants that are actually highly toxic to your cats, such as Lilies! You’re also a parent now so don’t leave things lying around, especially if you’re adopting a kitten. They will play, bite and potentially eat anything and everything! (A piece of string can be swallowed, get entangled with their intestines and become life threatening). That doesn’t mean expecting things to be safe because they’re up high; cats are basically toddlers who can reach the ceiling, but also get into the nooks and crannies. Put things away, you’re a responsible owner now. Do your research!

I was also looking at his paws the same way a parent or caregiver admires their child's hands, running the tip of my finger over the top of his paws, wondering "Just how can someone decide to declaw their cat while knowing the consequences of doing so or knowing that it's cruel and debilitating?" I've never considered love and attention as "maintenance" so when I have stated cats are "low maintenance" its generally meant they don't need to go out and be walked etc. This is the first time I have heard someone state cats do not need a partner/friend - several vets I've gone to, as well as professional cat experts, Jackson Galaxy esp for one actually promotes providing a cat friend for the other cat in the house (of course if they're compatible, that is). Have tried the pellets(sawdust/plant based - both types) for kitty liter - my cat HATES the stuff. Agree w/the whole bathing cat thing - it can be extremely traumatic, & unless they're actually muddy etc, no baths. Cats will tell you with subtle ques what they want/need - they aren't always annoying - are you trying to put a video out to deter ppl from getting a cat w/this video? Glad you made sure to state to not discipline them - they're just a different type of animal all together. Regular vet visits for sure as cats have extremely delicate internal make ups in systems etc. 1 Cat - 2 boxes - You always want to double up on liter boxes, 2 cats - 4 boxes. Cats are extremely clean animals and hate stepping in their poop and urine. Spay/Neuter - that's a given for any animal like cats, dogs. Declawing is cruel - you can also, aside from trimming the nails, can put caps on them that you can get from your vet. They are temporary but its a lot better than being an absolute horrible person and putting your poor kitty through removing 10 tips of their digits from their feet. Don't want your stuff scratched up, don't get a cat. Period.

Cats don't really need to be bathed. Their tongue suffices. 8. Cats can be annoying. One must be patient. 7. Cats cannot be disciplined through punishment. 6. They DO need med attention from time to time. 5. Do get enough litter trays, e.g. 3 cats should have 4 trays. 4. Get the correct food for them, not the cheapest. 3. Spay/ neuter all cats. 2. If you are going to provide toys with feathers, don't ever leave a cat alone with them. Or any toy that has yarn or string. Supervise you cat while it plays with those, as they can become choking hazards. I don't let my cats play with those kinds of toys. Catnip toys without any loose threads or strings or pieces of loose fabric are fine, along with plastic rattle balls. A cat can have plenty of fun with safer toys. If you do let a cat play with feathered or yarn toys, take them away after a certain play period and keep them in a safe place away from the cat. And always stay with the cat while it's playing with them. If it looks like the kitty is trying to bite off the feathers or may swallow the yarn or strings, take the toy AWAY from the cat. You could save its life.

There is a difference between declawing and trimming that some people fail to understand, if you point a strong light source to the side of a cats nail you'll see that there is a "inner" pink colored nail inside his nail, that is what you're not supposed to mess with, if you're just trimming the outer white part it will be just like we humans trim our nails and it wont be harmful
