I LOVE your videos! I’m a 45 year old woman. Wife and mom. I love to garden but this fall was the first time I ever got tired of having a bad lawn and I decided to take matters into my own hands. The lawn looks beautiful !!! Did EVERYTHING you said to do for cool weather grass. The men that mow the lawn are impressed with how it looks. I actually asked my husband for a lawn mower for Christmas because I would like to start doing that as well. Thank you! And I’m looking forward to seeing how the grass looks this spring

It's been a whole year without one. Good luck on the mower; you'll always cut your grass with greater care and frequency than a gardener will and maybe you'll also get a flap disc angle grinder for Christmas too to keep those blades sharp! :D

That was a lot of good info in one video.... as for adding top soil to seed when applying, most of the nseeds I have access to are mixes or hybrid mixtures. Some seeds are large, some tiny. No way of determining an appropriate seed to soil ratio.
@TurfMechanic
11 ай бұрын
when in doubt just go with a thicker layer of cover soil or peat if you can't water as often and a thinner layer if you can water more frequently. Big seeds can sprout if left uncovered and small seeds can sprout if buried too deep; it's all about getting the best germination rate possible and if you have a mix of different seeds moisture management is the biggest factor.

One thing I wish you had touched on… letting Nature overseed for you. I returned from a long vacation and found that our fescue lawn had grown 12 inches and produced seed heads. I was amused by how much seed was among the mowed grass clippings on the street. I asked my turf goods supplier if the hybrid grasses I have produce fertile seed. He said ‘yes’. I hope to save $$$ by letting the lawn produce its own seed occasionally.
@TurfMechanic
11 ай бұрын
That's something that is going to vary quite a bit based on the grass that's growing in one's lawn. Most people have no idea what grass is already in their lawn and even if they do they have no idea what variety it is. Some grasses will make seed heads that aren't viable, some won't make them at all, and some will be able to reseed. Every bag of seed will be different too. One tall fescue blend may produce viable seeds while a different bag of tall fescue may not. Another problem with letting nature overseed for you is that unless your lawn is weed free you will also be letting nature overseed undesirables into your lawn when you purposefully let it "overgrow". Even as I type this there's a ton of things on my mind that I'm not saying so this is really a better topic for a full length video. Thanks so much for taking the time to suggest it though. Topic is now well on my mind.

my new house came sodded with contractor grade grass. over the years the lawn had bald patches, thin areas. i overseeded with tall fescue RTF. common fescue is clumping in that it does not readily spread. whereas Rhizomatous Tall Fescue sends out lateral rhizomes, thus self repairs the lawn !!!!! i purchased RTF from United Seeds. i prefer using ONLY fescue (no rye, kentucky blue, etc) i used ORGRO compost for top dressing, makes for a happy lawn.

Haha...I love how ya'll make it seem so easy. New to lawn care so I of course digested as much content as I could. Chose a plan going forward to get my lawn nice without too much hassle. Spent the late spring and summer getting the soil proper. Got rid of most of the weeds. I was left with invasive Bermuda grass and Carpetgrass. I didn't want to mess with killing off 5000 sq feet of lawn (in hindsight I should have just bit the bullet and did it). Dethatched and scarified the lawn. Overseeded in early September with a blue tag seed that the state university said was excellent for this area. Watered twice daily for a minimum of two weeks as I don't have a sprinkler system installed. I probably got 10% germination after 3 weeks. How disappointing. So I used the remainder of the seed to git the bare spots and covered with some straw (I think the birds got most of the seed the first time). Watered twice daily again for two more weeks. This time I got great germination on the bare spots but hardly any in the overseeded lawn. Extremely disappointed. Now the Bermuda and Carpetgrass are going dormant and I'm left with patchy lush green tall fescue scattered about. I chalked this up to wildlife eating the seed and I got about 5 days of 90+ degrees after I seeded the first round so I should have watered more. After watching your video, now I'm not sure at all what I did wrong. I do like your idea of using annual ryegrass with the fescue. I'll probably do that in the spring so my lawn doesn't look like crap next year. If you read the comments it would be nice to see what your opinion is on my situation. Thanks for your videos.

Agh so much work! Sorry it didn’t take better! I just reseeded my fescue a week ago and decided to water like crazy. Every 2-3 hours during the day (plus we have some hot days here too) and it’s taking better than when I watered less frequently for the first couple weeks. Also my fescue sometimes takes 3 weeks to come up. I know I’m risking fungus but I spend good money on this seed and I want it to sprout! I also spread chicken manure compost…and covered about half of the area with burlap in the thinnest spots which is helps a lot. Not really practical for a huge sf! That common Bermuda is a pain in the keister. Sometimes I ponder just going straight Bermuda but I love the fescue. (And I put a little perennial rye in also)

actually a lot of people will dethatch first, it's a great technique to improve seed to soil contact but it's hard and an extra step so the average person won't do it. If you do run a dethatcher over the lawn it will come in better and root into the soil better instead of into the thatch layer or the layer of dead clippings sitting on the soil. I advocate for it from time to time in my videos, one good example of it is in this video I made a while back on overseeding "perfectly" kzitem.info/news/bejne/yn6pm4SEjJmedHY&pp=ygUgb3ZlcnNlZWQgcGVyZmVjdGx5IHR1cmYgbWVjaGFuaWM%3D

Yes, NTEP does a lot of testing on turf grasses and I believe they have found Bolt Kentucky Bluegrass to be the fastest to germinate, probably why they named it that. Years ago I bought a box of couch seed from Bunnings. It was 40% couch and 60% rye. The ants ate the couch seed and I finished up with a rye lawn.
@TurfMechanic
11 ай бұрын
By couch I'm assuming you are referring to Bermuda grass which sometimes goes by that name in other areas of the world. It would make sense to have a mixture like that for year round color but it's hard to imagine a scenario where the bermuda died off leaving just rye so your theory of seed loss to "wildlife" is probably right. If the mixture was planted in cooler temps the rye would've germinated while the bermuda or couch seed didn't as it requires warmer temps to grow from seed. Eventually much of the bermuda seed could've been eaten. Personally I find it weird to put both of those types in the same bag because both germinate so differently and should be planted at different times of the year.

Help please. In seattle a lot of seeded lawns dry up and "die" with a week of temps in the high 80's then might come back in late september as things cool off. I am told that the original seed was an incorrect seed, but I have no idea of a seed that can stay relatively alive and green all year around in this area.
@TurfMechanic
11 ай бұрын
you are in the land of ryegrass and if you accidentally apply annual rye it will start dying off at 90 degree temps so seedlings may start dying in upper 80s. Just make sure you use a PR to prevent die-off and if you go with a KBG/fine fescue blend instead you may get very long green growing season. Probably 10 months of the year depending on how cold you get in mid-winter

Not happy that you are recommending glyphosate. Is nice looking grass worth the possibility of it causing health issues?
@BenjaminT.Minkler
11 ай бұрын
there is a huge difference in how Glyphosate is used in farming and how it is used for home lawns, the two biggest are that it isn't used every year and that we don't eat our lawns ....with farming they are growing annual crops that must be replanted every season which leaves the ground bare in the off season for undesired other plants to grow, and they also grow crops in rows for easier harvesting so still some bare dirt throughout the season(many crops now are genetically modified to resist Glyphosate ~ the same company makes both the seed and chemical, Monsanto ~ so Glyphosate can be directly applied to the food) nature tries to fill in bare dirt with plants to keep the soil alive and healthy, but factory farming oddly doesn't want that, nor really care about the long term effects they have on soil and consumers - but home owners with lawns do, and rarely desire to have bare dirt for long unproductive periods that harms our soil health or allows low performing annual plant(weeds and crops) growth and kill off that don't keep good permanent root structures to feed the soil, so it would be crazy for a lawn to be doused with Glyphosate as often as they do with farming; cause lawns are perennial high performing grasses and thus have some of the best top soil[where the huge majority of atmospheric carbon actually is sequestered, much more than the forests of trees or any/all top growth] so yes, a nice looking lawn is more worth it than most people understand, because of the micro bio life it permanently supports so well underneath it ...Glyphosate targets top active growth, and really has very little effect on dormant plant life and soil with no 'pre-emergent' qualities then quickly become inert, it is only the sustained absence of root growth and repeated use directly on food where it causes so many problems
@vinnie302
11 ай бұрын
Are you drinking the glyphosate or something? I would stop doing that. Spraying on your lawn isn't doing any harm unless you're breathing it in on a windy day.
@TurfMechanic
11 ай бұрын
a slightly safer option might be glufosinate for people worried but as Ben said below, glyphosate in lawns aren't used frequently, it's not like you spray it on the lawn multiple times per year every year. It's usually used to help transition a lawn from an old state to a new and improved state, like turning the page of a book. Get a nice Perennial plant like a modern turf variety growing and you'll never be tempted or need to apply glyphosate again.

I think you saw crop cover, it holds in moisture and protects deed from nature giving more even germination. I have used clear plastic in other videos though and that's usually to help warm the soil up for seeding in colder months like February or March. If the soil is warmer it will germinate faster and the plastic will trap moisture under it so you don't have to water constantly. Can't use plastic in warmer months though. I put plastic on a lawn in 2022 in February for a few sunny days in winter conditions and still recorded soil temps in the upper 80's even though we had frost on the ground in the mornings.
