You are misinterpreting what is meant by an "NHL Draft bust". He was a bust from Arizona's perspective. Whether he's talented or not isn't the point.... it's about what he brings to the organization that drafts him. Even if Strome goes on to produce amazing numbers in the future, he will forever be a draft bust for Arizona. That doesn't mean he is a bad player, or that he is a failure either.
@stevenpfaff14

Adam202 Okay I see what you’re saying about it not working out for Arizona. However, in the short sample size from his play in Chicago, it’s Arizona’s own fault he didn’t work out for them. Not giving him enough minutes and quality teammates didn’t give themselves any favors.

@@stevenpfaff14 I would imagine that finding the right organization with individual players, coaches, and staff that can all work well together is a far greater challenge than most fans realize from the outside looking in. It was a BIG mistake putting Jack Campbell on this list as it appears he's found his niche as at least a backup NHL goalie, and possibly more. He's only 26 and goalies are productive well into their 30s. In his last 20 NHL games his save percentage is .924 which is well above the current NHL average. If he continues to produce calling him a "draft bust" and having him 8th on this list is going to make a mockery of your whole video. Except for Dylan Strome (calling Strome a bust is also premature), the rest of the guys on this list are either playing in Europe or in the AHL with no chance of an NHL career whereas Campbell is currently producing well at the NHL level.

And some goalies like Mike Smith, Craig Anderson, Roberto Luongo, Ryan Miller, Pekka Rinne and Henrik Lundqvist are still contributing at a high level at 35 or older. In 2007, my son and I, both lifelong LA KINGS fans, attended the NHL draft in Columbus Ohio. Kings had the 4th overall pick and we were truly excited. The arena handed out excellent paperwork detailing the top 26 players available for the draft. By the time the Kings selection arrived, we had about 30 fans sitting all around us rooting for us. Then came the announcement, “ With the 4th choice in the 2007 draft the LA Kings select Thomas Hickey.” Suddenly, the whole arena went dead quiet. All those around us turned and stared at us. I blurted out WHO?? Then, in the midst of stunned quiet, one of those around us said, “He’s not even listed in the top 26!!” My son and I both fell back in our seats dejected. It was at least ten minutes before someone broke the silence around us by saying, “sorry......”. The rest is history, just like Hickey’s career.

At least you werent Bruins fans in the draft of 2013. Three first round picks numbers 12, 13 and 14 (or something to that effect) and all we got was Jake Debrusk, some horrible undersized russian forward and at best a bottom pairing D-man that might have played 50 games in the NHL total. And withiin the next couple picks Brock Boesor, Matt Barzal and 2 or 3 great defensemen were taking before the end of the first round. Rumor was we wanted to package the picks to move up for Noah Hanifan. But still to have 3 first round picks and get a half decent 20 goal scorer isnt what we needed. I think the bruins have another cup if they drafted better in 13 or the year they missed out on Logan Couture. Drafting Pastrank at 26 was a great pick though.

NPAMike the 2 other Staals? There’s Eric, Jordan, Marc, and Jared. All but Jared are good. Jared’s played under 10 NHL games. Marc’s not a bust either. And Eric and Jordan are former all-stars

Hickey isn’t a bust, he didn’t play that bad with the Islanders but for a fourth overall pick he didn’t turn into an elite defenseman.

At the time of this video, Campbell had two seasons where his save % was above .920. Just because it wasn't with the team he was drafted by, it doesn't make him a bust. Hickey played parts of nine seasons with the Isles, played over 450 games, and averaged 18 minutes of ice time per game. Considering the average NHL career is five years and/or 400 games, I would say he was just more average than a bust. Mueller has injury issues, which derailed his career. If you are including those who were injured and became a bust, why not list Angelo Esposito? He was considered to be the #1 pick by many a year prior to his 2007 draft. But by the time 2007 came around, he dropped all of the way down to the Penguins at #20. A year later, his rights were traded to Atlanta. Within a year, he re-tore his ACL. He bounced around the AHL and ECHL over the next two years before bouncing around Europe. Or what about Sasha Pokulok that was drafted by the Caps in 2005, who also had concussion history but never played in the NHL?

Pavel Zacha is definitely making a considerable impact in the Nhl as a black hole. You could put Hall and Mcdavid with Zacha and their total points in a season would be 80 with 2 points coming from Zacha

Make a risk rewarded listing. Players that got drafted way higher than expected and turned out great. Feels like dumbest thing to do in draft is to reach a lot, you got top10 pick, pick a top 10 NA or European

I think some people are confused by what it means to be considered a "draft bust". If the organization who drafts the player does not get the expected return on that player, then it is considered a bust. It doesn't matter how talented a draft pick may truly be if they are unable to produce the results they are expected to for the organization that drafts them. Most of these guys are probably very talented, but for one reason or another things just didn't work out as favorably as they were expected to. Many of the players that are considered to be draft busts will probably go on to have successful careers for other organizations. You just have to look at it from the perspective that the scouts and organizations are to understand the mentality. I mean, just imagine being drafted right alongside McDavid and Eichel.... the expectations placed on you are going to be very tough to match. In hindsight to my comment above, I didn't realize just how few games Strome in particular had actually played with Arizona. So seeing the criticism about him being on this list makes a lot more sense to me now. I think my point is still relevant in general terms, but Strome seems like an Arizona blunder more than anything else. I can see him going really far with the right NHL team.

Dylan Strome was only considered a bust because he was drafted third overall. He has been a good NHLer and I would say he is the top 25% of players in the league. The fact is if he was drafted #15, he would not be in this video.

I wouldn’t have called Mueller a big flop because that was all on Gretzky and Tippett. He succeeded with Gretzky letting him do whatever he wanted but Tippett came in and said “nope! You’re young and I need vets.” And put him in the scratch list just like Turris. The biggest three draft flops for the Coyotes have been Lucas Lessio, Sammuelsson, and Dylan Strome.

For those going off on how some of these players are too young to be considered busts, this is a list about teams who drafted a player and had little to no production from the pick and eventually got rid of them for something far less valuable than what their original pick was (except for Reinharts case. Barzal definitely would be a top 3 pick)

Not really sure why a few of these players are in here. Every draft is obviously 20/20 hindsight. Strome led the AHL team in points as a rookie and hasn’t stopped improving. And guess who probably wants Jack Campbell now? The Dallas Stars. Every player develops at a different pace
