I live in a rural area where cell phone coverage is either unavailable or spotty at best. I have five land-line telephones in my home, and four of them are antique rotary phones, with the oldest dating back to 1927. The fifth is a red push-button phone from the 1960s. I recently had a young handyman in my home to do some repairs. His cell phone had no signal, so he asked if he could use my phone to make a call. I couldn’t help but chuckle to myself when he realized that he would be making his call from the 1937 Western Electric Model 302 phone in my living room. That is the same phone that often appeared in "I Love Lucy". I showed him how to use it, and I think that he was amazed that it actually worked, and that I didn’t have to keep it charged.

There's a wired phone on the desk literally right in front of him! Has he never seen it used? Yes, it has buttons rather than a dial, but you still have to pick up the receiver before dialing a number. Even if you're using the cordless handset, you still have to activate it and hear a dial tone before making a call. How do kids today not know this? Wired phones haven't exactly vanished from the face of the earth, they're still all over the place. The fact that this phone has a dial doesn't change the basics of how you use it.

Excellent point. When some of them get into the work place many of them will need to be able to interact with desktop (Landline) phones in their jobs, or perhaps when away from home when away at college. I agree every video I have seen of this type none of the children think to even try and pick up the receiver first, but yet in many of them they pick it up and put it back down to "reset it" if they messed the number up. I am old enough that in the home I grew up in we had theses until I was about 8 or 9. Both rotary phones were replaced and one went to a touchtone phone, the other went to a cordless. It was hilarious because then not only did you just push the buttons to dial the number you could walk around the whole house with the phone.

@@williamdiehl117 Same here. We had a wall-mounted rotary phone from the telephone company until the late 70s or early 80s, as did my grandparents downstairs. Then both were replaced with wall-mounted touchtone phones from the store. At first my grandmother didn't like it, but she quickly got used to it. My grandfather ran wires so that they could have a second phone in the living room and so that my parents could also have phones in the living room and their bedroom. The one in the living room was a cordless one, with a metal antenna that you had to pull up. I seem to recall that there was an open question about whether you were allowed to do this, or if you needed to pay the phone company for having extra phones connected.

I hate these videos when they don't show how the kid learns how to use it. Otherwise, what's the point? Just to mock them? The mocking should be at the parents for never teaching their child how to use a regular phone in case of emergencies.

I know this is funny to a point but what if technology went down and cell phones and computers couldn't be used. It can happen. Worst case scenaro would be what if the phone lines went down? Does anyone know how to write a letter, and post it?

it's funny, of course, and we can laugh about it, but unfortunately, there are no videos about grand parents letting their kids figure out how start a coal fire in a stove... and for that matter.. there are no videos about how pyramids were actually built ... since no one knows the details about that. Oh .. and btw it took me more than a day to figure out how to make a call on a "smart phone", when I got my first one (yeah and I am a mathematician)

Rotary phones aren't that much different than a push button office phone. Surely young people have seen office phones in use in stores, offices, schools or on tv etc. You have to pick up the receiver first. See that office phone over to the left on the table ? This is probably staged, not real. Not sure. With modern office phones you have to pick up the receiver first or click the speaker button.

No, its an old technology that kids/teens today have either never seen before and have never used before in their entire life. And with all these tech savvy kids today obsessed with iPhones or smartphone devices the parents are just having a little fun with their kids by having their kids try old technology.

How many here know how to use a 'RPN' calculator. they are more simple and flow better. the sequence is superior for calculating.. but most can not use them.. because they are familiar with 'regular' calculators and not RPN calculators. they look like idiots when trying to use RPN and the idea of using a 'stack' is foreign to them. and this is cross generational.. so before boomers get all haughty over the idiocy of kids. it really has nothing to do with smartness as much as familiarity. in other words we are all just a bunch of trained monkeys. but it is kind of funny to watch..
