The mental aspect to riding is a big one that I think you guys could delve into more so. I’ve seen really skilled riders hold themselves back because of fear and not able to push through that mental barrier.

1: it's not about the bike: back in the early 90 i was racing downhills and i was getting 15th overall at the best. then i spend all my savings for a full suspension bike with a just realeased rock shox judy DH (the red one) with a whopping 80 mm of travel. I was convinced i would be in the top ten or even get me a podium!! bummer, 13th place and some old guy in his 40's on a fully rigid mtb with tumb shifters won with something like 3 minutes ahead off me. 2: nowadays on social road rides there is this rich guy who gave my a hard time for not keeping up an avg 30 km/u on my 34tT geared mtb (on a road ride) so i switched to a 38T. He bought a £2000 carbon wheel set and a dura ace pinnarello dogma. I bought a £200 road bike. Now he doesn't ride the group anymore. 😞 3: after 35 years rejecting road bikes for mtb training it seems they are a great tool for mtb training (thanks to the rich guy 🙂

Never think you’re better than everyone you’re riding with. You might be fast and be trying as hard as you can, but others might just be cruising and enjoying themselves.

I ride the trails just about everyday, I am in my late 30s but have found mountain biking to be such a good stress reliever. I ride during my lunch break from work. I ride for fun and a break from the computer screens. I have also found to be very helpful for my health, since I started making mountain biking a part of my routine 2 years ago, I have lost over 50 pounds. I wish I would have taken it sooner.

That last one is a really important one. Sometimes I get on a bike and my timing is just off . My body is either half a second too slow or half a second too fast. As a non -professional that does this for fun I've learnt to just coast down the trails on those days otherwise you get bucked and end up taking a heavy hit.

recognise at my age (77yrs) combined with injuries from long ago that are now coming back for a second bite & affecting my riding flexibility and speed of movement (ankle fracture/replacement and knee fracture in particular) hence I use flats for ease of movement on the bike. I’ve learned that I can still improve my line choices, & general riding ability by trying on every ride to be smoother, let the bike do the things it does rather than over riding and generally having fun….i don’t ride an e-bike I have my pride and joy an Atherton AM.130….and ride it on forestry trails several times a week…life is 🚵♂️😊

The simple fact that you are still riding, and having a whale of a time is an inspiration. I'm approaching my 50's after a military career and feel the body giving out. I promise to be still trying to ride in 20 years time, like you are.

Work seems to be the biggest obstacle for me. Now that I am 56 yrs old maintaining flexibility gets harder and harder! However, once I finally get out on the trail or get with friends on a group ride, the fun returns. Would love to do some more racing but work just makes getting quality seat time difficult.

I live in Whistler which is the kind of town that no matter how good you think you are at something there is always someone better. To many local kids (of which I am definitely not one) put their faith in becoming pro riders/skiers or whatever but there is no way they all can and they are fooling themselves to think they are all going to walk into Finn Iles or Jackson Goldstones shoes a few years from now. Be realistic about your level of talent I guess is my non pro tip!

You always get the person who pipes up with the old statement "I could've turned Pro!". Regardless of what sport you might be partaking in. Boxing, football, cricket, tennis. I can guarantee if you ride with a group of roadies at least one in the group will come out with it. Before they go on to explain their downfall I usually jump in and say "but you didn't!" There are 1000s of reasons why, most of them have nothing to do with capabilities and talent. Over the years I've found the main reasons are, focus, determination and tenacity. The best of the best have those 3 things in abundance and they come to them naturally from a very young age.

Being a pro takes a huge amount of support from family and friends. It also makes a huge difference to be grounded in your faith. People of faith have a character structure to help them with all the high demands that a high discipline life style requires.

If you're looking to develop a career in racing in 2024, do your best to avoid covid infections. Hard to be top of your game if you've got long covid symptoms. Every infection increases the chances of LC. Wear an ffp3 mask in indoor, busy spaces.

Jeesus - I *almost* had to stop the video. When you guys are doing content, don't ride an emtb around because the whine of the bloody engine is really bloody annoying. Ride your fekking analogue bikes - so you don't torture your subscribers with unnecessarily poor sound quality throughout the videos. Maybe you're getting paid to ride the emtbs, but if not, it makes for not just really poor but actively annoying audio.
