In 1973, the army chief Augusto Pinochet came to power in Chile. This was a fairly typical situation for the region: in South American countries, the military had traditionally played an important role in political processes. Pinochet promised that he would bring peace and security to the Chilean people. Under the guise of this goal, he launched intense repression - Pinochet exterminated not only the opposition, but all dissenters as well.
He held power for more than 15 years.
When the vote to extend his presidency for another eight years came up, no one doubted that Pinochet would win. But despite widespread skepticism, the opposition, which had been underground all along, decided to take a chance and try to persuade Chileans to vote against the dictator. For the first time, the fragmented opposition put aside political differences and united for a common cause.
