I realize that this radio did not present the issue that it was brought into you for, but the memory fix made me EXTREMELY happy. I own a TMV7A that belonged to a friend of mine that passed on in 1998 and it was doing the same thing. I looked for a battery to no avail and I couldn't find any resolution to the issue online until I saw this. Thank you so much for showing us (ME) how to resolve this issue.

Oh the "Blue Wonder". Have not heard that term in quite a while. I got mine in the 90's. Work ok then the display went crazy. Dark vertical lines. In the early units they used a stick on ribbon cable to the LCD. The later units I hear they soldered them on. These were prone to fail. I also read something in the data sheep on the Eeprom about how many writes it allows. After 10 years this is exceeded and would need to be replaced. My old unit is around here somewhere in a junk box. At the time a replacement display was like 160 bucks. Thanks for the video Peter. Enjoyed it my friend. 73

Hi Buddy, yeah it is still a nice radio but the display problem is still not solved and Kenwood do not deliver any new displays for this radio. I have seen several projects from ham operators but all replacements do not support all functions as far as I know. Thanks for stepping in Take care my friend 73

@@TRXLab I see a different video where they are able to remote the display ? Perhaps then you could use a more common display ? Also, display's have come down in price. Not sure how special this one is. I simply would like a way to easily understand programming from the front.

It really a nice video. I always try to remember if I have problems with anything to do a reset or just unplug it to get rid of what I call a burp. Here is a latest one. Our X Box would not login the internet. I told them to unplug it. Nope I was wrong and they said I need the password. It wasn't picup the WiFi. The next day I unplug. It reset and there was the WiFI. I enter the password and it works again. This is the 5th time in a year to do this. Thanks for you video.

Hi there. The reason the radio was coming back to a default setting when switched on was because it was In programed memory mode. You can program 4 presets within this radio. If the radio is in program memory mode the radio wil come back in the selected preset. Presets can be selected by pressing PM and then 1,2,3 or 4. Presets 1,2,3,4 can be programed at will. To get the radio out of Programed memory mode. Turn off the radio. Press and hold CALL than power on the radio. Press call again. 73

I've owned a V7A since they first came out, and they can be very glitchy in situations where they may not be getting enough DC current, or have been on during a power outage, etc. Fortunately for me, doing a hard reset has worked every time I've needed to preform it.

I had one that I bought circa 1999, it developed the dreaded lines down the display issue within about 18 months. After wrangling with Kenwood over the span of a couple of weeks, they finally acquiesced to replacing the display for free. Get about another 2-3 years use out of it, then the display just kept going completely white after being powered on for a few minutes. Finally just threw the thing up on eBay as a parts unit and actually ended up getting a fair amount of money for it. Display was novel for the time, but clearly wasn't implemented well.

I bought mine when they first came out. No problems with the unit or the display until a couple months ago (July 2021) when the display developed a line that stays dark. It's only one line and everything else still works as new. I probably have over 1000 hours runtime on this rig.

I picked one up from an SK estate, turned on, worked fine. After a few days turned on, worked fine again. Didnt use it for a while and recently n turned on, worked, shut down. Now it will not poŵer on at all. Checked fuses etc. But wont do anything. Strangely it does seem to draw power (on my bench supply) when connected,, but nothing happens - blank screen - its literally 10 of 10 condition too and no one local to me repairs kenwood - anyone have a similar problem they were able to fix?

It was in PM mode 1 (you can see a number 1, at the left-hand side on the display) and PM Auto Store was Off this is why the frquency was not stored. You can enable the PM Auto Store from menu or exit from PM mode by pressing PM,VFO buttons.

My radio is half dead. Half the display is gone. This is the second display, and you can tell the UHF frequency, but the BHF has so many dead pixels that it is unreadable. Its a shame too as other than that the radio worked great. Oh well, my free Chinese radios have to substitute I say free because I have been sent a few to evaluate and make videos of. They work for sure, but not as nice as the old Japanese radios.

this radio was made in the 90es. The EEPROMs made in those years were guaranteed for 10 years of data retention. Change the old EEPROM in this Kenwood to a brand new, which is guaranteed for 50 to 90 years of data retention.

just what I needed, thankyou DP6T from N6GRG .... I was able to get much of the reset by simply doing the standard function. You meantioned some other things not related to memory functions. Are you able to see this in the kenwood manual ? I haven't found reference to hot reset yet.

On my radio it was a bad solder joint at the 0 Ohm resistor. After turning off the radio every memory and settings where gone. Resoldering the the 0 Ohm resistor in the display unit did the trick. The 0 Ohm resistors are there to setup regional settings.

Another hint was that at first, instead of the "'." sepparator on the 2m band, you had a "_" even when it was powered down and it kind of resetted itself. The "_" means that band is on AM mode... That may be a sign of EEPROM corruption also

the hard reset also changed the 2 meter mode from AM to FM receive, I still have a TMV7 but the display is defect, not a few stripes but only a few dots left working, the connector fo the display has come loose, that is the biggest problem the MTV7 had and there are no replacement displays for it.

Hello Mr Radio Doctor ;-) Ill give it a try, maybe you can help me out. I have an TMV7 on my workbench. The radio didn´t power up. I changed C503, C514 and C523 on the control unit. Surprise it worked put after a few minutes (or seconds) it freezes. Any idea? I am sure it´s a f..... capacitor......Btw I also changed C9 in the display unit......Same problem... Interesting thing. If I crank up the voltage from about 4V slowly to 8,8V the radio powers on and after a few seconds "FREEZE". If I wait about an hour It works great (no need to crank up the voltage) and FREEZES again after a few minutes!!!..... Hope you can point me in the right direction ;-) 73s Alex OE6ASF
