I think it is about how everybody was making their own armors including very colorful ornaments as well. Especially Sipahis received no salary from Ottoman rather they were local forces who joined army during wars instead of paying taxes. And they were supposed to arm themselves entirely, you could notice an older, well experienced Sipahi from a mile distance as they were heavy armored like this while rookies were light armored horse archers etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't sipahis more defined by their status as, should I say, "non-hereditary knights," and not necessarily by their equipment? Couldn't a sipahi be skilled as both an archer and a heavy cavalryman? Anyway, that wasn't supposed to be an attack on your authenticity. Nice armor, nice video. Ottoman weapons and armor are indeed overlooked topics in the historical scene.

Very roughly speaking they were divided into 3 types during their heyday. Rumelian (Balkan) Sipahi who would be moderately armored and fight with lances. Anatolian Sipahi who would be lighter armored and fight with a bow and a lance. And then Kapikulu (Imperial Servant) Sipahi who would have the most amount of armor and be more similar to the Rumelian Sipahi. I imagine the armor in the video would probably only be worn by the Kapikulu Sipahi.

Sipahi is not a knigh, or similar to it. Sipahi is a man who was lended some farmland by the sultan so he would farm it for 5 years, then buy himself armor and weapons for the war. If he agrees, then he can lend it for another 5 years and so on. Typically, they would agree and the farmland would be lended continuously to his family.

I only do Buhurt duels in it. That’s what the pictures are from at the end of the video. I wouldn’t do buhurt melee with it just because you wouldn’t want to wear the mail and then there would be a ton of gaps. If you want burhurt eastern armor, your best to go with something that has small over lapping plates. Though I do use this for Harnischfechten and it is fine. But that is always done with the mail and you don’t take repeated bashing hits.

If you really want a easternish buhurt gear - mongol or russian armor will be the best you can get to achieve protection and some historical truth. Russian armors since the 15th century until the late 17th century were pretty similar to this design, most likely because they bordered a lot of Muslim kingdoms.

They constituted the main strength of the army of the Ottoman Empire. 1- Tımarlı sipahis would join the war during wartime and engage in agriculture when there was no war. 2- All of the Timarli sipahis were horse and bow-bearing soldiers, their characteristics were to ride horses quickly and shoot arrows from the horse. Another reason why the Turks were successful in European wars was that they had the ability to move quickly with light armor against heavily armored knights.

Eye Sockeds are kinda wrong. and also some wear iron masks. people know it as cuman war mask but its turkic mask used in ottoman too. at late period it turns to chain coif with longer helm with eye sockeds. wrist guard looks little off too. its usualy many plates overlaps for allow sipahi to use bow instead of cut lines. overal its pretty perfect and cool armor. but one must consider they are not heavy cav more like archer medium cav. also shield usualy hangs on back or side on top of shoulder allow sipahi to shoot block at the same time.
