Can we talk about how many minerals are named for what happens when you light them on fire? Off the top of my head, I can think of spodumene ("reduced to ashes") and scolecite ("worm-like"). I would love to see a gem destruction lab video on minerals with names like that being set on fire.

That was fun and informative for sure. I love learning about new minerals that I didn't know about. Those were definitely interesting! Thanks guys as there is no way we would have been able to pronounce them on our own. Nor would I want to try to! Thanks for sharing!

Cummingtonite, that one caused sniggers at uni, your metamorphic amphibole... Analcime, which I acquired yesterday infact.. Dickite which I think is something to do with clay and hydrothermals... Arseno-anything.. Fukalite from Fuka mine in Japan..

Your videos brighten up my day :) I am a fan of frankhawthornite. Why settle for just a last name when you could use the whole thing? Plus, Frank Hawthorn is a member of the Order of Canada, so that is fun too!

So the story of eurekadumpite is that the discoverers of that mineral wanted to actually name it something arguably worse: dumpite. Seriously. But the IMA rejected the name. The thought process was basically this: they wanted to name the mineral dumpite to celebrate the fact that many new species were discovered in mining dumps, long after a mine’s operation. An admirable cause I suppose…but just a poor name that calling it eurekadumpite doesn’t make it sound any better.

Yeah, I think the "Dumpsites" were whatever minerals left over from when Mining companies were only concerned with Gold, Silver, and Copper deposits in the 19th Century Western USA.

Here's wacky mineral names that will make you crack up more than a fissure. Dickite Dickinsonite Cummingtonite Sarkinite ( named for it looking like human flesh ! ) Fukalite Analcime ( Analite ) Stoppanite ( very rare member of the beryl group ) Apatite ( not named as an appetizer but its name means deceiver ) Seamanite Taranakite ( is a mineral formed by either bird or bat poop ) Despujolsite has a crazy name but it's a veru rare beautiful yellow green mineral Zippieite Parisite ( not a parasite but name after someone named J.J Paris ) Mitridatite Zapatalite sounds catchy And finally Cookeite . A green mineral that sounds tasty

Some of my favourites are our Western Australian stones: the famous Mookaite, named after the deposit on the Mooka River, near Carnarvon; Yerillaite Agate, a beautiful, newly discovered deposit of pale blue and brown agate, from Yerilla Station, north of Kalgoorlie; and Jigalong Jasper, which is a lovely soft mauve jasper from Jigalong, near Newman in the Pilbara region of WA.

Oh dear lord, new thing I can hyperfixate on because somehow all this has something to do with volcanoes and many many other fascinating things... Pretty sure most of my friends are somewhat tired of me trying to teach them everything I've learned about volcanoes (note: I have attention span of a squirrel so learning is tad bit challenging and my memory is not what it used to be)... AND NOW THERE'S NEW THINGS I find interesting... 😱😱 Sorry for rambling, I'm just happy I found this channel. 🥺

As far as odd names go, the most uninspired sounding mineral name would have to go to - Sampleite When it comes to Precious gems - Jeremejevite and Painite seem the most notable. Last but not least - Väyrynenite, such a complicated name for a mineral with such a simple formula "MnBe" very pretty though. All of them named after people, as can be expected from most minerals with funny sounding names.

I sweat seems like you're doing it on purpose: A week ago, I just asked myself I wanted to search some info on Chrysocolla, and after a few days, there's a dedicated video on it. Today, I went to my local specimen store, and I saw there on the shelfs (still there from a long time ago), some specimen of BixbYite. In fact I always got confused because it doesn't resemble Red Beryl AT ALL. And then, this video came out...
