Hey man, I'm an Architecture student who just started a few days back. Next year's 16" MacBook Pro will use the 12 core "M1X" chip and also have at least 64GB of RAM. We just had a class about the software we need and a Windows vs macOS discussion. Two of my teachers categorically said don't buy a MacBook. So, I wanted to hear your thoughts about app compatibility and graphics performance on MacBook Pros

I have no issues with compatibility with native macOS architecture programs. If you install windows on it, then it's essentially a windows device. Overall, getting a windows laptop will be more convenient/wallet-friendly because it will be able to run MOST if not all programs you would need to play around with in school.

Honestly I don't mind spending the extra cash, because it's worth it.I've owned 3 MacBook Pros over the last 8 years and my 2012 MacBook Pro 13 had macOS updates till 2020. No windows laptop can match this. As architects aren't we supposed to pick the better designed and built laptop? Sure Dell and Asus make rad looking machines, but the design gets outdated within a year or two, and there's too many random gaps and screws on their laptops. On design and built quality alone, my 2013 MacBook Pro Retina is better than laptops twice or thrice it's original price. I'm also a part time KZitemr and personally I think Final Cut Pro is the currently the best optimised video editing software on the market (it just works, in every Mac, all the time). Apparently, I'm a Civil Engg student and somehow we have the same courses too. And for me, MacOS is too limited because there are Engineering and Architecture apps that I can't let go on Windows. But I have the Intel Mac and used bootcamp to have a windows partition. M1 is the first gen of MacOS chips made by them and it's not available on the M1 chips, let's just hope that Bootcamp will be back on the next generations of M Chips. However, you may want to settle for Macbooks with Intel. It's still your decision :)

Jon, thank you for your excellent videos! I'm an interior design architect and just started consulting. I am committed to Mac because of their simplicity. I was windows for years, but within 2 years they were always riddled with viruses despite using anti-virus software, etc. I've had my Macbook Air for 8 years and am finally upgrading. Like you, I'd mostly be using Adobe suite (Indesign + Photoshop), Keynote/Powerpoint, Sketchup Pro and AutoCAD Lte. I'd maybe have to open a Revit file that someone else created to add information or review, but I really wouldn't be using it too in-depth. Do you think the base model will work well with this (i9 processor, 16G Ram, 4GB graphics card and 1 TB storage)? I can be up and running in that immediately, whereas if I special order it'll take a couple of weeks. The only upgrade I'd do is go to 32 GB and the 8GB graphics card.
