3:09 how to perform Counting Sort: 1. Read everything once 2. Read everything twice 3. sort it.

I always find that sort so satisfying because of the simple efficiency of it
@Psyony
5 жыл бұрын
Basically, it goes like this. I have numbers 5346271, it reads them, and says, "okay. My lowest number is one and my highest number is seven. I know the values of each numbers. Now which ones are higher?" Then it reads them again, storing information on which numbers are less than/ more then others, and the sorts the numbers in full order.
@1313eable
5 жыл бұрын
@@Psyony No, it does not. It first obtains the lowest and highest number, and then simply counts how many it has of every number in that range. After that, it can sort the entire array, as it knows how many of each number there are. This is very powerful when you have a large array with integers that are very close to each other.

it sorts things from the rightmost digit (ones digit) until it reaches the leftmost digit, which is why it creates patterns. it kinda weaves things together.
I find it fascinating that because the distance a dot is from the center depends on how close it is to its spot around the circle, and because hue is circular, the shuffled circle of dots looks a bit like a color pinwheel - the dots of a particular color start close to the center in the side opposite where they should be, and expand around until they are at the edge of the circle on the other side. Also, because hue is circular, the dots that are at the beginning of the set (on the orange-red side) but are supposed to be at the end (on the violet-red side) are still close to the edge of the circle, even though they are as far from their spot as they can be. That means that where a dot is isn not only dependent on how close it is to its place, but also how close it is to the middle of the set (around cyan). This makes for some interesting shapes in the animations.

You could assign the current numbers to notes. if you take the chromatic scale (All 12 notes) and octave them up to get all the required 500 notes it would sound basically the same as now, despite some random funny licks. But not viable. If you would take a proper 8 note scale (which would come in 7 flavours) it would sound like a VERY weird solo.

My favorite was the “Radix LSD in-Place Sort (Base 10)” 3:36 It was cool seeing and making sense of these pretty and complex patterns that spring forth under these conditions. I love things like this because it shows all the beautiful patterns that can exist in basic computer algorithms and a bit of maths. Also, HEADPHONE WARNING (Thanks for quieting it)

IKR! im going to have to think about this harder in a bit here and try to figure out why these shapes happen. Time to learn how a bunch of sorting algorithms work.

Those shapes are mathematical, and the different sort types follow different mathematical rules. Those shaped don't happen by accident, they follow formulas, also called functions:)

The video is very satisfying. I love how you can watch the individual colored dots align, and make a beautiful annulus. Technology has come a long way. It can now simulate things that were considered impossible. It is very interesting to think about! This was very enjoyable to watch. Thank you for this content!

Either that or something like sleep sort. I think that would qualify as a type of "time sort".
@w0rthy_

The principle is that if I wait x milliseconds for every number, x, in the array simultaneously, then the smaller numbers will finish waiting first since they wait for less time, and thus they will be placed in the array first. This is a multi-threaded algorithm, and since I don't have a 1000 core processor, there are inaccuracies produced. One way to increase the accuracy is to simply multiply the amount of time per number, so with mul 4, the number 11 would wait 11*4 = 44 milliseconds instead of 11. You can also take advantage of the fact that the numbers are placed in near perfect order by the time sort and run an insertion sort, which approaches O(n) run time as the array becomes more sorted.
@w0rthy_

pwnetic I heard of this concept briefly several years ago, and for some reason I was convinced that it was a "time sort", although I see that the common name is "sleep sort". As for the multiple passes, it is not possible to perfectly sort 1000 items (with values 1-1000) in one pass in a quick time utilizing only 4 threads, so I decided to use a multiplier of only 4 and let insertion sort finish, as the array is in near best case for it.

@@w0rthy_ I feel like the sleep+insert sort is the most elegant way of sorting simple data. Every time I see it, I'm blown away by the efficiency of achieving a rough estimate sort and following that up with smoothing the local variance. Does it scale well?
