13-year old Blade Reed and his 16-year old brother Bennie were two young brothers living a quiet life in the country when everything changed in the course of one sad night in 2008. When the boys came up with the idea to steal beer from an elderly neighbor, they had no idea it would change everyone's lives forever.
After knocking on the door saying he needed to use the phone, Bennie pulled a gun out of his pocket in the hopes of scaring the neighbor before stealing the beer. But the neighbor had a gun of his own and shot Bennie in the arm. Bennie returned fire and shot the neighbor in the head. When the neighbor's wife heard the commotion, she ran downstairs to see what was going on. She talked with Bennie and tried to reason with him, but in what he says was a state of panic, he feared she would be a witness and shot her too. When she didn't drop to the floor and continued to talk to him, he instructed 13-year old Blade to cut her with a knife. Blade couldn't bring himself to cut very deep and instead, the woman told the boys to leave and they did, riding their bikes back to their house. The wife eventually drove herself to a family member's home and was taken to the hospital where she was treated for her injuries and lived. Her husband sadly died the next day in the hospital.
It took two months before Blade and Bennie Reed were arrested for the crime. During their trial, it was revealed both boys suffered physical abuse and molestation as young children, and their biological parents had been terminated of their rights. There was also testimony of abuse by their adoptive parents, as well as Blade suffering from ADHD and being diagnosed with autism.
Bennie eventually plead guilty to murder and aggravated battery and received a 60 year prison sentence. Blade pleaded guilty to robbery and received a 30 year sentence. In this first-ever prison interview with Bennie inside his prison cell when he was 19-years old, he talks about that fateful night, the remorse and regret he feels, the events of his traumatic childhood, what life has been like the first 2 years behind bars, and the guilt he feels about involving his little brother in a crime that ruined so many lives.
2021 Update: Bennie and Blade remain in prison today. Bennie's projected release date is 2037. Blade's projected release date is 2027.
