Some great advice in this video. 1: Stay away from the ferries. I always stay away from ferries, they are not my type. 2: Always have a good pickup line. Something I wish I had when I used to go bar hopping. (joking) Cheers from Winnipeg.

Hi Frik! Your "no-load" use of the "no-load" horn cleats on your spreader bar is the first time I've seen anyone get any use out of them! Good on you! The spread bar gets nearly all of its strength from the of the Seagull Striker cables. This is ONLY strong in the Up/Down vectors, NOT Fore/Aft vectors, that is why Leopard puts a placard on those 2 horn cleats that says essentially "no-load" use. Yes, your Bow Sprit puts Fore/Aft loads into the spreader bar at the center-line but you will notice that you have a structural member going aft to just above your anchor which is carrying all of that load. I really like your how-to informative videos! Stay salty.

Hi Frik. Another good one, thanks. Some of those folks looked a bit disconcerted that there was someone suddenly holding their bow talking to camera…. I assume they were ok with it…. did you discuss with them first? I suspect yes. Also can I ask what the extra short line and eye zipclipped onto the starboard side of bridle is for? Thanks for sharing this. I must admit I also like to just stare at the boat around you as I dream about a Leopard 45. :)

One always ask permission from the captain ;-) Good observer, Tony! The short piece is part of the original anchor bridal and we were not sure if we would still need it or not. After a few months of using it, we decided to take the short leg of and use it as is. Very useful when anchoring in shallows for example, in 3m water, one's scope is at least 12m and our Mantus bridal is 10m, which defies the weight of the chain completely if the bridal is hooked at 2m chain out. Secondly, if one does use the minimum scope of 1:3 then the Mantus bridal is at least 30m chain out before hooking and then 10m more for the bridal leaving you with a radius of 40m. Something to keep in mind.

Hi Sailing Sisu. Another great episode. I like the way you explain things. I am currently working my way through RYA day skipper. In some of your other videos I see your chart plotter displaying COG as true. Can you help me understand why you choose to have your chart plotter display true over magnetic. I understand how to calculate between the two. I don't understand the pros and cons of having true over mag on your displays. Most other channels use magnetic.
@SailingSisu
2 жыл бұрын
Very good observation followed by a very good question! I also got my RYA YachtMaster and those guys are very heavy on chart plotting :-) Pain in the ass to convert between magnetic and true while always taking deviation and variation into account! So, I think you might have came across a few remarks of mine where I am not a big fan of paper charts however, all markings on a paper chart is true (most charts try to stay true north in there projections), while all bearings taken with a compass, are magnetic. I rarely use a compass. Many times, we been arriving at and anchorage after sunset, left and anchorage before sunrise, or sailed through the nights on passages passing rock outcroppings, athols, and islands. We've seen many light houses not in use, light markers not in place or out of order, or the chart talks about a back bearing on a hotel or a house that doesn't exist anymore or is in an over populated and not anymore the only big promenet building in the area. All of the above makes it impossible to keep track of your position. In my mind, it would be actually super dangerous to sail for example BVI or Bahamas during the night using a paper chart and compass. Long story on way I am not a fan of paper charts :-) but the thing is, all markings on a chart has to be true and all compass bearings has to be magnetic before deviation and variation is taken into account. So, I choose to show my chart in true. BTW...we once calculated that one needs 24 ton of paper to circumnavigate the Mediterranean using the proper charts at the proper scale ;-)

@@SailingSisu Thank you for the response. Wondering if there are times when you would prefer it was on magnetic. When communicating with other vessels about your heading or bearing off a mark do you calculate or give that information in true. Also when tracking another vessel on AIS does it get confusing?
@SailingSisu
2 жыл бұрын
i found two scenarios in the last three years....1) the big cargo/tanker ships scenario. They always use AIS, which shows possible collision the moment the other AIS is picked up, which most of the time, is too far away to see the other vessel. But when one radios them and informs them of a possible collision, we arrange and stick to it. No confusion exists between M and T because all COG is true. Headings and bearings are M. 2) bare boat charters on collision. One can see a possible collision by just looking at a stanchion or stay and see if the other boat stays on a fix bearing, if so, possible collision. Most of the time these boats do not even have VHF and cannot be reached. In cases like this, COLREGS should prevail, but many times, the charter captain is not even aware of collision, nor COLREGS and we must adjust course. In none of the above a compass was used. BTW, we do have a big ass compass at the helm station and two very expensive handheld compasses too, but never used them yet.

Hi Frik, nice video, I do a great deal of mooring in US and BVI's and normally use to mooring lines. I love the idea of using the Snap Shackle. When she was making the mooring connection, she made it directly on to the mantis snap shackle, but in the video it looks like you used another shackle to connect the mooring lines then to the mantis snap shackle. Was there a reason for this? Thanks for the well done video.
@SailingSisu
Жыл бұрын
Douglas, if you can tell me the time in the video, then I could answer your question better. That said, the snap shackle should always go through the main eye splice of the mooring. I noticed many boat tie up onto the mouse line, which is wrong. We did, too, until I saw the difference in size and quality between mouse line and mooring line. So, perhaps you saw the eye splice and thought that is another shackle? Or is it our mooring bridal's shackle you saw?

When catching a mooring ball in a strong tidal area, ie. 6knot current. Would you catch the mooring into the wind or into the current?
@SailingSisu
2 жыл бұрын
Ah man! I knew I forgot something that's why the video is so long! I was ranting on while trying to remember what I forgot :-D Tides are much stronger than wind for sure! It does become tricky when tide and wind are both strong, but in 6kts current, I guess tide will for sure win or if the wind is that much stronger, you should not be there trying to catch a mooring ball :-D The correct statement should be "your stern should point in the direction of your drift?" But it is difficult to keep the bow pointing to the mooring ball if off the wind...mmm. tricky!
