I bought an old ICOM IC-211 many years ago off Ebay and it needed some repair. I used that thing for a while working 2M SSB nets once a week for years. Eventually I bought a Kenwood TS-2000 that did almost all the bands up to 1.2g. I miss chasing weak signals on 2m. Ham Radio has been one of those life long hobbies that I've taken "vacations" from but allways seem to rediscover it and go back to it for a while.👍📡📶

I have an FT480R 2M multimode which I bought new in the 80's I think. I was totally surprised to find one on display in the Science Museum in London. Now I know i own a museum piece. 🙂

I worked on one of these rigs a few years ago for a guy I knew. I guess the threw-hole design is fairly serviceable and all the tuning and alignment procedures are easy to follow. Its hard to find a 2m rig with SSB, so its good to have around.

Nice little unit. I've bought an Icom 290H about 12 years ago and have never made a single contact on it. It's about the same vintage as yours. I used a similar radio to yours about 30 years ago and loved it. I like the led display, but vfd displays are my favorite (next to nixie tubes of course). Lcd sucks!, but what do you do, you've got to take the good with the bad. I want to put my little Icom on the air now so thanks for showing and 73's!

I have the Kenwood TR-9000, almost an identical radio. The "Hi/low" power switch is replaced with a selector for repeater shift (+/0/-) preset at 0.6MHz offset. The output power is around 15W FM. So there is at least two different models of this Trio/Kenwood radio, as well as perhaps some differences between the US, Japanese and European versions.

Picked up a TR9130 from the refuse a couple of decades ago. Got the bugs (yes flying ones) and hardware bugs out of it. Used it for maybe 10 years. Then more issues surfaced, and moved it on. Also had TR9000 and TR9500 Most rigs these days are multiband and multimode. I have a few Icom 202s hanging around. Going to resurrect a transverter setup again.

I just scored a Motorola that's yet to be identified. The only difference between this one and it is that the analog dial is under the led monitor. It's 2 meter two, but the ham that previously owned it passed and left the Motorola fan attachment on it (which alone showed serious defiantly and money put into it). I've got to do some digging, but I'm happy it came with its tuner but no cables at all. Thanks for the content. 🤙🏽

That's a good radio. I had a new version, 9130 that had 25W but looked the same. I got it from a ham in Seattle (XX7MDL) who used it as an IF for his UHF work. It worked very well, and I used it to work into LA from Vancouver BC (SSB, 3-elem beam, early 2000's). I donated mine to the SPARC museum when I downsized. I wish I had kept it because my KX3 only does 3W on 2m! 72

I have the US version of this radio, the K/W version. The G version has some Japan-specific variations such as a different freq offset for FM repeaters. The big issue to check if low power doesn't work or if you aren't getting mic gain on SSB are the pots under the top cover. The manual will tell you which are which. The original mic may be needed for SSB use also. The G model also does not have the external input for a tone pad / PL generator.

Nice radio! I had the TR-9130 I think was the number when I got started as a ham and was just starting with satellites. It was just a higher power model of the TR-9000. Wish I had kept it just for my radio collection..

The time that came with my rig has that same power cable (that's missing too) and i think it can be fed from the gen radio I got. It's funny how we go from an HT to all the random radios people are giving away in no time. 😆

I have a TR9500, which is the 430 MHz version of that transceiver. Not much SSB going on at those frequencies, though.

Nice radio 👍 My guess is that M.SHIFT stands for "minus shift" and DS - for "digital squelch" (which today is called CTCSS).
@va3dxv

There's nothing digital about CTCSS. DS is dial step/search step

A very nice device that makes a very stable impression. The microphone jack is also robust. Not as shaky as today's RJ microphone plugs. Trio reminds me of my early days as a radio amateur in the late 70s. I'm looking forward to episode 2... 7. 73 de DL1LAJ

@IMSAIGuy No PL, so not a great FM radio for repeaters, but could be a very fun radio for SSB in a rover or at home. Nice size for a rover too, just add an amp and go to town, very cool

@IMSAIGuy I know right, i used to run a KDK FM-144 from the car, until repeaters commonly used CTSCSS. Then it was pulling over, get out the book because i couldn't remember the tone lol. Now, Icom ID-5100, just s touch of an upgrade lol But we had fun then too.
