I can confirm getting cut will make you a better person if you go about it the right way. At the beginning of the year, before indoor percussion and the online wgi circuit, I was working my ass off to get cymbals and after months of practicing cymbals wrong, I got cut and put on glock. There were some nights were I was just really pissed the whole practice. I’d get home, tell my mom I was doing good, then go in my room and cry. I was obnoxiously loud some nights at practice when playing. Then one night, it hit me. I’m a trumpet player normally, so I get to play decently loud most of the time, but glock is entirely different. It sits on the top of the balance triangle. Sure, I failed at getting cymbals, but I can’t let it hold me back. Glock may have sucked some nights, but it taught me a lot about music and knowing your place in the ensemble. It also humbled me. I’ve been open minded more and more since the season started and even up to now, and when I try for southwind, I’ll sure as hell be ready. Edit: also good luck other universe Eric

Not sure if this is still relevant to you, but Seavine is putting out instructional videos on how to play cymbals with East Coast technique. SCV also has a playlist with Zildjian demonstrating the West Coast technique; look for the 2018 version, their previous playlist is somewhat outdated.

Alternate dimension Eric at ~ 8:09 is pulsing the doubles as he gets faster. His left hand appears to have a slightly higher stick height when compared to his right. However the drum's striking plane + camera angle may be causing an optical illusion. The pulsing is still there, whether intentional for the prescribed style or not.

It's really all about being in the right place at the right time. You may be a great player with great technique, but you may not be a good fit for a particular ensemble at that point in time. Some younger players audition too early in their musical development, which acounts for a lot of "cuts" in the "cut world". I waited until I was ready back in the day until I was a sophomore in college to audition for D.C.I. (Spirit of Atlanta) Had I auditioned earlier I'm sure I would have gotten the heave ho from Tom Float because I was not ready to blend with the style he taught. Marching in college alongside guys who marched in Atlanta gave me an advantage. This was before computers and You Tube, so you would have to learn the style and exercises from someone in person. (friend-lessons-etc) So there you go. My take on this subject. * Also, D.C.I. back in the day was not as populated with high school kids because they simply didn't have the skill sets that many have in the computer age. The only way to emulate great players back in the day was to actually see them briefly in action on the field at a show or at a rehearsal. There were no videos to speak of and certainly no video auditions. Young players today really have no excuse for not having the skill sets needed except for a lack of work ethic, natural talent, and depriving themselves from phone time and the computer screen. Sermon complete. As you were soldiers.

I got into my schools honor choir in 7th and 8th grade (the only years you could join) then my schools Jazz band 7th and 8th grade (also the only years you could join) then my choir teacher specifically asked me to join the New Jersey all state honor choir in 7th grade. Then I auditioned for the honor choir again and got the 4th highest audition score out of 60 something people. Then I got into my high schools select choir, and select men's choir. Then I got into my high school drumline and Jazz band (which not many freshman did).

I have noticed that visual ability has become a much more important part of the audition process than back in "my day" which was the 90s and it makes sense. Back then I think they figured if you could play well, they could beat you enough to make you good at the visual stuff which was far less complex than today. If I had to audition based on today's visual standards, they would have laughed me out of the room.

This similar thing happened to me. I just auditioned for tenor drums for Kansas State University’s drumline in May and I freaking nailed my audition, but unfortunately they only keep 6 tenors as opposed to 12 snares basses and cymbals and the other people who auditioned were on the tenor line last year. As a transfer student from another college I basically just got screwed even though I played it pretty much perfect.
