17 meters is a great band. If you homebrew a 17 meter dipole, it will also work quite well on 6 meters (50MHz) as a three-half wavelengths antenna through an Antenna Matching Unit. I worked a Special Event Station in Crete on 6 meters SSB a few summers ago (Sporadic E) through my 17 meter dipole. Also, there is a major contest happening this weekend so it's an excellent time to head towards the WARC bands!! 73 to all, have a nice weekend. Ed M0MNG.

A CB 5/8 is good for 6mtr. 49 on ssb should be a free band.

Yes, 17m is certainly opening up now that we are heading for summer, in the Northern Hemisphere.

Great band to operate on, managed to work Qatar whilst mobile with an 857 and a Maldol whip. Better still for those who have to work during the week, there are no contests on here every darn weekend.

Hi,good interesting video 👍, you have a very high noise floor ☹️,is the spectrum scope always so difficult to read, or have you not set up it up,looks like headache central,,,,,to intense,,,and fast, thanks from Rotterdam 73👍

What’s below this standard 17m band plan? I hear NOAA weather broadcast on 18.065, is that normal?

I’ve recently picked up an Icom 2800 and I’m looking for a decent video or instructions on doing the frequency expansion for TX/RX. I’ve found some spotty information with hard to read diagrams or poor pictures. Any help would be great appreciated. Thx

Thanks for the video, very interesting. What's the go with modes like SSTV on 17m ( and other WARC bands)? i don't have privileges for 17m at the moment, but i hear there is some kind of bandwidth restriction are on sstv and alike modes?

It depends whether you consider SSTV as phone (SSB) or a digital mode. Normal SSTV usually uses a 3KHz SSB channel (though actually only needs about 1100Hz bandwidth). The original idea with SSTV was that you could talk and swap images during an SSB QSO. So you could use SSTV in USB mode in phone section of 17m. However, some consider SSTV as digital. So, the 1100Hz bandwidth would bust the commonly accepted 500Hz limit on the digital section of 17m. However, you could use Narrow Band SSTV (N-SSTV) which only has 400Hz bandwidth. You can do this by selecting N-SSTV modes like MP73-N on the MMSSTV software. I have tried a few times calling N-SSTV on WARC bands with no luck. I can't even say I have heard N-SSTV on 17m; think I may have on 30m though. Fair to say N-SSTV is not very popular which is a shame. I quite like SSTV/N-SSTV and, given so many hams now have their computer/rig set up for modes like FT8, it is quite easy to get going on SSTV with free apps like MMSSTV.

@@Steve-GM0HUU yeah, thank you for the information. I ask because last sunspot cycle, there was a Facebook group that was solely dedicated to doing Narrow Band SSTV on WARC bands. it did not bother me any because my call don't give me WARC bands anyway, but seeing this video about 17m, i thought i would ask what the go is with all that. But i am still a little confused. if it's fits within the 3khz ssb bandwidth, who cares what mode it is? Because if it was not SSTV occupying that 3k space, it would be voice or some other mode? i know we all use computers to do sstv now, but the emission itself is still Analog J3F. at the end of the day, my question is, can full bandwidth sstv be done warc bands or is that not allowed?

@@43PR50 Basically, WARC band plans do not allow SSB on 30m - so you would be restricted to "digital" N-SSTV only on 30m. However, on 17m and 12m, you can use SSB which means full 3KHz bandwidth SSTV is OK on 17m and 12m.
