And this gentlemen is why after wrenching just over 25 years I retired in 1999 from being an ASE Master tech who specialized in heating, air-conditioning and onboard engine diagnostics due to back issues. Often I thought of what I might do if I ever meet the engineer/engineers who designed and continue to design this type vehicle and others like it without any concern whatsoever for future serviceability. Back in my day the Ford Fairmont was one of the nightmare cars to have to replace the evaporator core in. Thanks for this video. You did an amazing job explaining every nut and bolt that needed to be removed. Unfortunately I fear my 2013 Rav4 will need this part replaced as I'm having to can tap about 6 ounces of 134a into my ac system every couple of weeks to keep it topped off. There is no way I can do this replacement. The estimates I have received are nearly $2000.00. Insane but understandable from a retired mechanics perspective.

My highlander got this problem and I was hoping the other models of Toyota would have it located somewhere better and easier to replace. Now, I'm so disappointed to find out Rav4 has it at the same location. 😮 Can I ask, why don't mechanics suggest to Toyota about this ? So, those engineers would stop "hiding" it. Can you tell me if the other cars (Honda, Mazda...) have evaporator core located outside the wall or they all have the same location? I love highlander, but I would buy another car (next time), which has that part located somewhere easier to replace. Thanks

Great video. Couple of things I want to add as a Toyota Master Tech. Leave the steering wheel on if you think you're careful enough. Just remove it from the intermediate shaft as you did. Leave the shifter on, it doesn't need to be removed. Again, great video

Good afternoon. Great video on the Rav4! I have a question that I hope you can help me with. I also have a 18 Rav4 with the recirculating door not closing fully and all the outside fumes get inside while driving. I removed the cabin filter and I saw the door only going halfway trying to close the Recirc door. I heard that you said that the blower motor housing can be removed from the main AC housing. Can I remove the blower motor housing from the main housing without tearing out all the dashboard? I really appreciate your time and videos! I'm really short on money and I need to change this actuator myself to save money. Thanks again!

If I just want to clean the evaporator, if I drop the blower motor is the condenser to the left behind the radio? Can I get the long tube from the evaporator cleaner back there to spray? Thanks and respect for taking the entire dash assembly apart.

Yes that's where it's located. I personally use a tool made for washing A/C mini splits? It's a solid copper rod that is surrounded by a 3/8" hose that is hooked up to a ball valve on a water hose. I can bend the tool any direction and it will hold its shape. Then, the end of the hose has a 90 degree spray head. Works good for cleaning Automotive evaporator cores.

When you installed the new core did it have the holes for the evap sensor or do you have to cut your own or force it in? I have ordered and returned 2 cores and both had to be returned because they didn't have the two holes for the sensor to plug into.

The evaporator temperature sensor probe allways has to be manually forced into the fins of the evaporator core. There are never "holes" pre-installed in the core. They are made only from you pushing it in.

i may have to do one on a friends 2016 rav4. I just want to know how you pinpointed the evaporator ? Is there a test port available to attach on the engine side of firewall to pressure test it? I checked for leaks everywhere that is accessible and didn't see anything.
@TechnicianRed

I used leak detection dye. Had to add dye, recharge the system with refrigerant, then wait until it was low on refrigerant again. Then used my Snap-on borescope with UV light to find the dye on the evaporator core.
