When we look back historically, two major coin sizes pretty much conquered the world during the era of the classical gold standard from approximately 1800 onward. These were the British gold Sovereign (0.2354 ozt AGW) £1 coin, and the French (and later, Latin Monetary Union) gold Napoléon (0.1867 ozt AGW) 20 Franc coin, denominated in the Franc Germinal currency that was instituted by Napoléon Bonaparte when he was still First Consul of the French Republic. These two gold coins (approximating to a 1/4 and 1/5 ozt AGW, respectively) were so practical and handy that they essentially monopolized the world’s commerce between them. Though larger and smaller gold coins denominated in Pound Sterling and Franc Germinal were minted, their mintage numbers were paltry and utterly swamped by the massive output of the super successful Sovereign and Napoléon denominations. These denominations were so successful and popular, that there was never really felt to be a need by their respective mints to introduce other gold coin denominations on a similar large scale (hence the small mintage numbers of the other denominations).

Napoleon was emperor of the French, not emperor of France. It is indeed a beautiful coin and truly precious

I have an 1808-A 20 Franc gold Napoléon that shows him as Emperor of the French but still list the name of the state as “République Française”. To round things out, I’m looking to buy one of the earlier Empereur+République 20 Franc Napoléons with the Roman numeral Republican calendar date (AN XI or whatever), and finally, a gold 20 Franc Napoléon of the Consular period. Then, I intend to conquer France and make her do my bidding.

"Then, I intend to conquer France and make her do my bidding." not worth it anymore stick with the gold. I had to get this because they are so cheap. how is 1812 napoleon gold cheap? nicked up, common, or whatever, these just seem cheap.

@@samy7013 - They do seem good value. But with mintages in the millions and plenty of supply they’ll never be rare, and collectors seem to demand rarities.
