Those batteries, wow, I've never seen any survivors that old before that weren't sitting inside clay vases

I restored one of these Omnibot 5402 2 years ago. A fun project. There's a site with manuals and stuff for this "robot" online. Powered from a large 6V battery, RC at 27MHz. If you manage to control the arms and claws of it, that would impress me for sure, LOL. And make it talk, and move around by itself, and..., and...

Back in the 60's I worked on a Collins Autopilot that had magnetic amplifiers. If you run across one I would love to see you explain it's operation.

Interesting project! I love those old Tomy robots. I was never lucky enough to own an Omnibot as a kid but i did get a Verbot, the voice controlled one that was, erm, a bit flaky to be polite. A couple of years back I mod'ed one to use a RPi Zero and the Google AIY kit to give it proper working voice control as well as voice assistant capability. I don't have a video of it on my YT channel but there is a 'reel' of it on my insta which you can view on the web without logging in if you're interested? I would post a link but experience shows comments with links disappear!

There are so many new sensors now, so yes it might be cool to upgrade with new functionality. Maybe it's too much work to add lidar etc, but some basic ultrasonic obstacle avoidance might be OK

I have a Dalek model that I've stored for basically the same idea someday. Unfortunately too many interests mean I never have any free time

Cool. Looks like it might have 4 wheel drive. If you hack it then you can call it IMSAIbot. Otherwise it stays Omnibot. This should be a fun series in any case. 👍

Nice! Requesting you to consider motorizing the arms and hands, and putting a front facing camera on the bot that sends images back to the remote 😊

You're lucky those batteries were from a different era when they were made very well and I used them exclusively. Duracell today I commonly refer to as "Dura-Leak"...will not use them anymore, Energizer is now my battery of choice.

I was volunteering at my local repair café yesterday and had a toy to repair. As soon as I saw that brand of batteries inside I bet that there's going to be a load of corrosion. "I thought they were the best?!" "Nah, they just have the best marketing" was my response. Sure enough, that was the only problem with it.

@@georgeprout42 I had a penlight hooked to my military load bearing equipment that I put in the attic in ~ 2001 when I retired. I found them just the other day, two AA batteries branded "Radio Shack"...I was totally convinced the whole thing would be corroded beyond recognition. But to my total surprise there was not a speck of corrosion AND both batteries measured about 1.44 V! Absolutely mind blowing...gonna keep them as souvenirs!

Cool toy for sure!, on the subject of batteries, much discussion on another forum about that particular brand, they're definitely poorer quality these days and leak a lot.

At 5:20 ... well those Duracell Batterys have been great, just no problem with leaks at all. I think something essential changed over time and so the newer ones started to leak a lot. Maybe beccause the older production had a little bit of mercury inside? In fact the cells got more enviromental friendly but on the other hand lots of devices will go to recycling or landfill just because the leakage destroyed them...

Yes looked at a pack of Durahells, that expire 2026, and all 3 were leaking already. The deterioration is because the owners of the brand stopped making them in their own factory, instead simply getting them contract made by the cheapest quote in China, sticking the label on, and selling as a premium product, relying on brand recognition to keep sales up. Remember they used to have a repair or replace guarantee if the batteries leaked, now it is watered down to they will only replace the batteries, and you have to ship them, plus proof of purchase, to them as well, and they do not refund the shipping either.

What a sad looking robot. I hope you clean it so it can feel good about itself. But it might still turn on you for leaving it in such a disgusting state.

Another youtuber just did a video on this bot, RandiRain. Might be a good idea to check out her work so you can get an idea how to take it apart. She does resto on robot toys, a lot of TOMY stuff. If you are replacing the brain, dump the radio and use an nRF24 module. I have a library to use a PS2 controller and a 328p as a controller. How far are you going to go??
