The Canal Bank has a pretty long history. It opened in 1831,its primary reason to finance the New Basin Canal.It had no less than 4 branch offices.Its main headquarters burned down in 1845,and most of it's debtors died in yellow fever epidemic in Louisiana in the 1850's.By 1920,Canal Bank was the 31st largest bank in the world.It went in liquidation in 1933 and was taken over by the National bank of Commerce.Aside from being obselete, or broken banknotes, the uncirculated notes with no dates were called remainder notes.Most available are pre Civil war

I have heard the term "remainder note" before. I just couldn't place it. I have the feeling these didn't survive the fire! LOL! Something tells me they must have just done a massive new print run right before the government issued the 1862 notes. That would explain the abundance of these remainder notes.

Thanks! This would be an easy introduction to large size notes for you. Mid 19th century and the city has a personal connection not to mention the low price! Good luck on your hunts!

It came yesterday. I just filmed next weeks video so it will be the one after that. I'm trying to space out my Confederate notes. I was amazed that I got this find from my bank within a week of getting C W's email. Worked out great for everyone!

Usually the unissued notes are the ones worth more but in the case of the Canal bank, it's very difficult to find the issued notes. So this is the rare time the unissued note is worth less than the issued one.

How do you identify real obsolete currency? Recently I got that same banknote but a $100 dollar bill
@Stuplubakcurrency

I wouldn't doubt the authenticity of the note if it is the Canal Bank. They are everywhere. They printed a ton of them and never authorized them. These are called remainders since they have no signature. They remain with the bank because they were never issued. The bank closes and these become really neat historical documents but not really worth a lot. If someone was to make fakes, they would fake a note worth some real money. I hope this helps!

@@emilianocarrillo5253 Another thing is when there are signatures. The ink used had iron oxide in it. That means it tends to rust. The print on the note will be black but the signatures tend to have an orange look to them.

I thought about that as well. You have to check the ink on the signatures to make sure they are oxidized.
