Below is a description of the town.
Belmont was established in 1865 following a silver strike. In addition to silver, the town also mined copper, lead, and antimony. The boom attracted settlers, leading to the growth of Belmont. By 1867, it became the county seat of Nye County and featured four stores, two saloons, five restaurants, a livery stable, a post office, an assay office, a bank, a school, a telegraph office, two newspapers, and a blacksmith shop. The town's fortunes fluctuated with the prices of metals.
By 1887, several mines had closed. In 1905, the county seat moved from Belmont to Tonopah. The mine dumps were reworked in the early 20th century.
The post office operated from April 1867 to May 1911 and again from September 1915 to 1922.
In the 1870s, Belmont was a prominent mining boomtown known for its silver production, with rumored population figures of up to 15,000. However, the total population of the entire county did not exceed 9,000 until 1980, making this figure unlikely. Another source estimates Belmont's peak population in the 1870s at around 2,000. Like many towns that have since become ghost towns, Belmont had a brief period of prosperity.
