My original 1861 US Revised Regs (with addendums June 20, 1863). I paid $90 for mine 20 years ago. Signed by a captain of the 102 Vol Illinois infantry, Atlanta Georgia, Oct 20th, 1864. It must have been taken on the March to the see since left behind, it would have been burned when CSA reoccupied burned out Atlanta in November, 1864. The Addendum about sky blue pants for us infantry, officers can wear the mounted great coats in sky blue instead of the dark blue (rarely seen) official great coat. Talks about clothing allotments and details on rank and colour of bars, buttons, frock coats. Light “sky blue” was far cheaper to acquire (less dye) than pants and great coats.

Been re-reading Casey’s and getting to Revised US Army Regulations shortly. It’s a great resource that can fill in some really big gaps in knowledge.

I think it be cool if y'all did a video showing some of Casey's Drill, my group uses Hardee's but there are few differences between the two having done both Casey's and Hardee's at events, or at least I've noticed very few differences

It is logical why you have not notices major differences . All the main civil war drill books are based on Hardees translation/plagiarization the french 1845 drill book. (the part of Gilhams that is about infantry, US infantry tactics 61, Hardee's revised, Caseys, and the one for USCT) Since he did the work as part of his job, it was not copyrights and in the public domain. So anyone could use his text for their own drill books... and plenty did try to earn money by making drill books when the war started. So 95+% of the text (in the schools of the soldier, company and battalion )in the other drill books is "copy+pasted" word for word. The only major difference is what manual of arms it use: The one for muskets, for rifles, both or a "new" one that is a mix. (and some minors like the exact distance between ranks)

Sullivan Press makes some great reproductions but on the subject of resources and paperwork they make a reproduction copy of Kautz's Company Clerk which was indispensable for officers then on paperwork so probably of even more use to us now!

Is there a manual for officers ,command instruction etc.
@CompanyD2ndUSSS

There is but it would have come out in 1865 by August V Kautz. He wrote the 1865 customs of service for officers and another the same year for non commissioned officers.

I find it interesting comparing the 1861 Revised U.S. Army Regulations to the 1863 variant of the Regulations.

@@NoOne-sc1ox Definitely. I think if the idea is basically recruitment/advertising, they might want to focus on how fun it is and then also have the information, appeal to more people that way.

Something you have to explain to people also not every soldier got a copy of the regs as far as I know because there were definitely privates who couldn’t read back than otherwise there definitely would’ve been more a lot more illustrations in the regs

It's still a good idea to own a copy. It has information about how the army worked, and other useful information that should be known by reenactors.
