I have made this hat twice now. I have made some modifications to the pattern. It is very important that you turn at the end of each row to get a slight ribbing effect. After row 4 (84 dc) I repeated it two more times to get extra length in the body of the hat. I think the final row of tc is one tc in every second stitch (15 tc) to avoid bunching up at the top. The other modification I made was to the border. 1st with outside of hat facing you dc in each stitch, join and TURN. 2nd row, sc, sk1, 7 dc in next, sk 1, sc. Join at the beginning and turn. 3rd row, 3dc, FRONT POST loop in next three dc, pull through loops and chain to secure, fp sc around middle dc of fan. I think you know the rest. The front posts are so much easier that the back posts ant this went from a one day project to an afternoon project because of this one tweak. It is important to turn though to make it work.

When I was researching the military history in my family tree I discovered that from around the 1700s and into world war I, the men where actively encouraged to and taught, a range of needlecrafts. Knitting and sewing type skills included. My dad (Korean vet) was very nifty with a sewing machine. He made mum a fancy blouse on it, just to make sure it was as advertised. My sister's father in law sewed new covers for all their camping chairs. Originally it kept men productive and creatively occupied and out of trouble. It was also an escape. Very useful skills too.

In the 1970s, men were encouraged to do needlework as a stress relief. My uncle did latch hook rugs, and it was published that the Los Angeles Rams, Rosie Grier did needlepoint, I believe. Corrina! The confidence you have in your work is enviable! The way you can look at your work and see that it’s wrong or that you slipped a stitch in the wrong place. It’s amazing. As for Justin doing crochet, have him use a long color change variegated yarn. Every time he finishes a color, he can change stitches. That way he doesn’t get bored, but still learns about tension.

That back post stitch section made me think of an exercise in 4th grade where we had to give another student verbal instructions on how to make a peanut butter & jelly sandwich and they had to follow our instructions to the letter which resulted in some sorry excuse for sandwiches. 😂 Trying to explain how to make a back post crochet at a time when probably not many people knew what they were does take a lot of words but I totally get how you didn’t see it at first. I love that your son crochets! He has great tension! I tried teaching my son years ago, as well. Now, he’s 14 and he’s found out that my brother (big, 6’6 macho man, mechanical genius) can knit. So, now my son is getting back into crochet a bit, as well (he’s also into gaming, horseback riding, guitars, etc. As they are). I told him I subscribe to quite a few men who crochet and that fisherman made nets by hand this way and they probably still do somewhere in the world. It’s not a feminine thing, and it should be something for everyone. So, I’m glad to see our younger generation getting into it and carrying on the skill.

I love these fiddly stitches! You did so magnificently at figuring out a way! BRAVA! I'm making this now in a 4-weight fuzzy vintage yarn that has no label/unidentified. It's a rosy light plum color. Looks a little like the Red Heart Brushed, but not as soft, has a little bit of a non-metallic glimmer, obviously a synthetic. (I did a burn test on it and I detect no wool or animal fiber and not the ash I'd see from a plant fiber, it just melts.) My initial chain of 84 in this yarn on a 5mm hook came out to 22 inches, which is a rather loose fit for me, but it gets cuffed up so I can always run a little cord of the same yarn between stitches to tighten it up if need be and that'll be hidden. As I type this I'm just starting the decreases on the crown. I think it'll be cute with one of my own design of blossoms on it. Love and hugs from north Texas. Edited to add: I think the adornment on that hat illustration might be a looped pompom. It's basically like making a regular yarn pompom without cutting the loops. Or like a very full tassel without cutting the loops but tied shorter. Does that make sense? After seeing it on you, I might add a couple extra rows to the crown so it can slouch and fold down a bit more. I have a habit of wearing my hair up and having a little extra slouch on top would work better for me. I'll try it on a few times as I work to check for fit. Might also do fewer decreases (maybe just every other row?) so it has more of a stove pipe shape to stack the pleats/folds better? I have recently been making a few of those long stocking caps (like Santa or elf caps) so I have gotten a better grasp on how to elongate these things now. Shaping my knit and crochet items is getting easier for me as I experiment with things. See, even old dogs can learn new tricks!

My sister and I both watch and love your videos!! You've inspired (and helped me) to try an old WW2 crochet magazine pattern. I'm a terrible pattern reader and without your videos suggesting how to know UK vs US stitches and such, I'd be so lost. So thank you so much!! Love the hat. Don't love it with the flower, good call!!

Love the first and second hat agree don't care for the sunflower. I think the original flower was an uncut pompom not tightly wound. When doing the backpost crochet stitch I find that pinching the 2 stitches together on the back side before insetting the hook helps me from splitting the yarn and getting tangled on the working yarn. Not a fail A success!!!!!

As a fairly new crocheter, I’m actually thankful about the backpost confusion- I have a couple of patterns I want to work eventually that has backpost/front post stitches, but don’t explain them! I’m sure I’ll end up looking up a tutorial on KZitem, but seeing you work through it has definitely cleared it up for me :)

You're on the same schedule I am. XD I'm recovering from The Plague, and my schedule is here, there, and everywhere. At least my sunglasses are broken, so I can't go out in daytime anyway.

I just wish that all my failures were as pretty as this one turned out!! My failures look and feel and fit like true failures!! So frustrating!!

As I was listening to you decipher this pattern's instructions, I am reminded why I rarely read patterns - the frustration I feel. I do feel the allure of the vintage and antique styles though. Sometimes I try to copy the look without doing the reading. You are admired and appreciated for your efforts. Peace and Blessings 🧶

Really love the second color peaking through the stitches in the first. Doing this with a couple very pale blues or creamy colors might make it look shadowed! I've seen people weave in those little jewelry pearls or fake diamonds into designs like this too so each crest has a little sparkle and that seems like another way to make that color transition a positive rather than a negative! Just add bling to it!

Love both versions of this hat. I would put a pin back on the sunflower to be able to move it around on the hat.

The flower on the brim is much better. Really cute on the side and merely cute in front.

If possible, please show stills up close of your scanned instructions from each page at the end of the video tutorial so we can follow along with both the video and instructions as well as the photo of the finished stitches. I also find it hard to see especially when it’s not possible to enlarge on YT. I take screenshots from your video to work with (I always delete them at the end and I don’t share them online, of course). I’ve learned to watch the whole video before beginning but, I still find myself missing things when fast forwarding and rewinding, esp when I don’t go back to double check instructions, (like turning my work! lol I’m so negligent about it! Smh 🤦🏼♀️) I love seeing your whole process and working out the kinks. I’m glad you leave it all in your video! It’s so relatable and helpful to see this. ❤❤❤

I just came from your other most recent pattern/video. I am ECSTATIC to see this!! It’s exactly what I wanted to go with a fancy triangular shawl for my mother for Christmas. I am so excited to start! Thank you, thank you, thank you 😊

You succeed big time every time you start one of these vintage patterns! The only way you would fail would be to say "I can't do that, I'm not going to try it!". Love both versions you made of this hat - NOT the sunflower!!! Love that Justin wants to learn to crochet! My son is & always has been a huge fan of my crafts. When he was about 6-7 years old, I made beaded counted cross stitch Christmas ornaments. He asked me to show him how to bead, so I drew a happy face on a circle of red felt and showed him how to secure the beads along the line. I backed & lightly stuffed it, adding rick rack around the edge and a hanging loop. It is one of my most cherished ornaments! He never wanted to learn crochet, but he did teach himself how to make chainmail! Like crochet with metal hoops! He made a beautiful rectangle design for me with stainless steel rings. I rub it between my hands under running water after chopping garlic - completely takes away the smell!!! Thank you for yet another excellent and entertaining tutorial.

I've seen some similar vintage hats and they showed the decoration on the side. I usually don't do pompoms or other doodads but if it was tall enough I might gather a few rows. Looks good anyway.

This has been SO interesting! And funny (sorry). One thing I might say is that when using a vintage pattern written out the way yours seems to be (one BIG paragraph), is to rewrite it out, line or round by round. Makes it easier to follow, count and see what you are doing. Patterns like this one, written in one few swoop, are why my kids thought I was practicing witchcraft, deciphering the strange wording. Not so sure they don't still think I am a witch, but at a certain point, we want to stop deciphering and translating, and just stitch the patterns! The hat is very cute, btw, altho it looks more flapper than Victorian.
