Cal Stewart was an American recording icon of the early 1900s. His recordings were among the bestselling of the period, and for millions Cal Stewart was the king of rural comedy. Cylinder recordings of his Uncle Josh Weathersby’s Punkin Centre Stories were offered already in 1898, 15 titles by Edison and 10 titles by Columbia, all still on brown wax. Uncle Josh's Arrival in New York on Edison cylinder #3875 and Columbia cylinder 14000 were among the very early ones. Two thirds of Cal Stewart's about 120 monologs on cylinders are Uncle Josh stories. There are only small variations among the many takes, that he did for many different companies and over time. One characteristic feature is that he made the announcements himself, ending in his typical infectuous laughter. Here we have two very early recordings on gold moulded 2-min black wax cylinders by Edison and Columbia. Even the details of the finishing stuttering sequences are almost indistinguishable. The cosmetic and acoustical condition of both cylinders is mint, with no mold fungus, the Edison coming in a rare box with a peg instead of a cotton lining, and the Columbia still having a blunt end. The cylinders are for sale. Take a listen.
