I've had the mirena coil for 5 months. The first 12 weeks was almost none stop bleeding, not as heavy as before but I still needed pads everyday. I've had no bleeding since week 12. No pain, no heavy bleeding, no periods anymore for me, I should of done this years ago. Hang on in there, it does get better ladies

i got the hormonal IUD today. i had worked myself up so much before hand, crying loads and debating cancelling my appointment. i decided to do it, as 5 mins of pain=5 years of protection. keep in mind, everyone has different pain tolerance. i usually get really bad cramps and heavy periods, so i’m used to my womb cramping, though i have a low pain tolerance. when i sat down the nurses were lovely and spoke to me the whole time. i asked for local anaesthetic and putting that on my cervix was the worst part, though all it felt like was that sharp tickley pain when someone pokes your bellybutton! after that i could barely feel a thing. please don’t listen to all the comments you read online. only you know how you react to pain and at the end of the day, you should decide whether or not you get it based of if you’re comfortable, not because someone else thought ‘it was the worst pain ever!’

Had my Mirena put in 16 months ago to aid long painful periods and to help possibly preventing polpys. I had a huge haemorrhage from polyps and was thus keen for any assistance. I am having it removed in a few weeks. I went from a UK size 10/12 to a size 20. The weight gain was so quick too! No difference in diet and exercised more due to lockdowns...but still the weight kept piling on. NEVER been overweight so was very alarming. Eat healthy...in fact I fasted for awhile as I was upset that I had gained so much. But it had zero effectiveness. Constant random cramping, migraines, infections, brain fog, blurry vision, incontinence...if I needed a wee...I had to go ASAP. Muscle aches, lower back pain. Really awful experience. Loved not having periods...but I want my body back. I don't want to have sex with my chap as I feel so fat and frumpy...from always being confident in my looks. So relieved it will be gone. Rather be celibate!

I had my Mariena IUD for 5 years now and had an awesome experience. I still gotten my period regularly every 28 days. However I just got my new replacement IUD and think it officially stopped my periods. I am currently on 5 weeks no period so a week late 😔. I prefer to have my period every month so guess this is my end of Journey with Mariena. I am having to many pregnancy dreams and PMS when it is highly unlikely I am pregnant so no good. It was awesome while it lasted.

Hi Kayla- First of all, thank you so much for sharing your positive IUD experience with other viewers. It is so important for there to be a balance of information out there... too often it seems to be only the extreme and rare (negative) IUC experiences that are shared online. To answer your question: once your (hormonal) IUD is removed, your cycles will likely go back to what they were before the IUD. Having said that, it is not uncommon for patients to have irregular cycles in their teens, and thereafter (generally speaking) over time, there is a tendency for cycles to become more regular. (I’m not sure of your age or whether this would apply). If you go back to having irregular cycles, especially if you are not having any menstrual bleeding for several months in a row (and you are not on the pill, and you do not have a hormonal IUD in place) you should see your doctor for further evaluation. -Dr. Dervaitis

My experience is different. I had mirina fir over 5 years between two pregnancies. I've always had heavy periods, before and mirina hasn't change it. I'm 44 and still gas very heavy period with mirina the sale as before I got it inserted. I'm lucky to get from a country where I saw my obgyn twice a year or more if I wanted and yes she suggested I uses a different contraceptive if I wanted. I continued using it. Just wanted some ladies to know the with mirina you can have heavy periods also.

I love your channel. Because of the information and reassurance you gave me, I got Mirena. My cardiac surgeon, cardiologist, Primary Care doctor, and OB/GYN surgeon recommended Mirena after my bicuspid aortic valve replacement with a mechanical On-X valve. They wanted me to get away from estrogen-containing birth control options. I was very hesitant to switch off of the NuvaRing because it worked so well for me for 15 years. But after listening to my care team and then watching your informational videos, I felt confident enough to give it a try. Your videos gave me the confidence to proceed, despite my going-in position of really being dead set against changing my birth control method after so much else changed during my open heart surgery. I got my Mirena yesterday, and I'm confident this is a beneficial option for me given my risk profile. Thank you for helping me see the benefits.

I have a retroverted uterus and drove myself dizzy reading up on botched reviews. DR. K’s videos restored my confidence and gave me the courage to go ahead with the procedure. The insertion wasn’t nearly as bad as my worries. I had an endo biopsy a week earlier, which was super painful for someone with a low tolerance for pain, but this felt like sharp period cramps, not unbearable. I did take 800mg Motrin to help with the pain an hour prior, maybe that played a part too.

Positive experience- I have had 2 mirenas and am having my 3rd in a few weeks. I used to have really painful and heavy periods, I had a lot of sick days because of it. I had a laparoscopy during my first Mirena insertion and they found ovarian cysts and the start of endometriosis(my mum had severe endo and required a hysterectomy, my sister also had endo and needed surgery to remove it from her bowel). It’s been lifesaver for my sister and I. I no longer get periods (only the occasional spotting), I sometimes get cramps still but they are no where near as painful and don’t last as long. I think I’ll be using this for my whole life besides when I decide to have kids.

Hi Kaylyn- What you’re describing doesn’t sound unusual or worrisome. Occasional mild cramping can occur with IUD use- it might not occur every month (can “come and go”). Breast tenderness is not uncommon with a hormonal IUD, and may not be consistently present (also might “come and go”). If you develop any severe pain/cramps, or any new heavy/prolonged bleeding, I’d recommend that you see your doctor for further evaluation. -Dr. Dervaitis

Hi Bisharo- Sometimes the IUD string is not visible-it often is just tucked up inside the cervical canal (and easy to reach with the right tools, which a Gynecologist will have in their office). Please see my video #13 “IUD Removal FAQ” which addresses this issue in detail. Because Gynecologists are specialists, it can sometimes take several months to get an appointment. I’d suggest that you watch video #21 “Where Can I Go to Get an IUD Inserted?” which discusses the Canadian RAICE network (Rapid Access IUC Centres of Excellence). If there is a RAICE clinic near you, you might be able to get in more quickly to have your IUD removed (the clinics do removals as well as insertions). -Dr. Dervaitis

I use to get really heavy periods that would last 2 -3 days, total period would be 5 days. With my heavy period I couldn’t go anywhere bc I would just leak through and would get quarter size clots. Decided to get Mirena and it really helped with heavy periods but gave me worse migraines and longer periods, they went from 5 days to 2 weeks now. It also makes me feel blotted and have gained weight with each Mirena, I’m on my second Mirena, I’ve kept the Mirena bc it really helped with the heavy periods. The first week of my period is on and off and very light, 2nd week it’s like a period, it’s not heavy and don’t have to change that often throughout the day. I am 3 years away from being 50 and can’t wait to get it out.

Hi Jordan- That’s actually a great idea for a future video. But briefly: -yes, recommend anti-inflammatory medication afterwards to help with cramps (can also add acetaminophen) -yes, good to have liners on hand as there can be light bleeding during the “adjustment phase” -yes, hot water bottle or heating pad may be helpful for cramping -don’t forget to use back up contraception where necessary (depending on the kind of iud and when it was inserted in your cycle, it may not be effective right away- your doctor will advise you). -don’t forget to continue to use condoms for STI protection as needed Thanks for watching! -Dr. Dervaitis

Hi Doctor, first of all thank you so much for your videos, they're so informative and it's been so helpful. I have a silly question, I just had hysteroscopy and mirena insertion just last Thursday so 4 days ago. And aside from some very light bleeding from Thursday-Saturday, all I have had are some light cramps and while I can't say they're painful in comparison to period cramps I've had before they are slightly uncomfortable. I notice it the most if I'm sleeping on my side if my back isn't straight or sitting cross legged if I'm slightly hunched. Is there a right way to sit and sleep for a bedding down period post mirena? Or should I be concerned about this? I'm going for my post op appointment on 4th of November but thought I'd ask here first. Love from New Zealand! xx

Hello to my New Zealand viewer!😊 There’s no such thing as a silly question! You can sleep in whatever position you wish after an IUD insertion- the IUD itself is well protected within the uterus and your activity/ positioning won’t “shift” it or cause any problems. The symptoms you describe sound within normal, and I don’t think are related to your sleep position. Thanks for watching, and don’t forget to tell the rest of New Zealand about my channel lol😊! Will the cramping ever go away? If so, any estimates on how long till I am pain free when not in menses? Thank you for these amazing videos.

Hi Susan- Unfortunately I can’t give give personalized medical advice over the internet.... Generally speaking, “adjustment phase” cramping can last 4-6 weeks (on average). It should not be part of a patient’s everyday experience with Mirena (forever...) We often use Mirena to HELP women with period cramping. If a patient has significant cramping beyond this time frame, I advise that they see their doctor for further evaluation. -Dr. Dervaitis

Removal of mirena today was soooooo painful. I had minor surgery when it was inserted at the same time as having fibroids shaved down. Thought removing it 5 1/2 years later might be difficult as my sister had minor surgery to remove hers due to having a tilted womb. I decided to have no further coil added as I'm 55yrs and want to know if I am menopausal.

Severe pain at IUD insertion can happen, but is not common. Unfortunately there is a disproportionate representation of stories of severe pain within social media. The majority of patients rate pain as mild or moderate or none. Some equate it as similar to getting a bikini wax or tattoo. Sedation is NOT standard of care for IUD insertion. Some studies suggest taking Naproxen one hour before may help. Other studies on pain relief strategies have unfortunately produced mixed results (eg. Some studies show injecting the cervix with lidocaine may help, other study show that the pain from the needle in the cervix may worsen the experience…) If the procedure is causing too much pain, it can be stopped at any time (the patient should feel in control of the experience). Please see video # 6 about IUD insertion. -Dr. Dervaitis

@dr.kristinadervaitis789

Having strings checked is a very simple examination (different from the insertion process). It usually just involves a bimanual exam (examining hand in vagina to feel for strings, very quick) and possibly a speculum exam (like at a Pap test). Some health care providers will order an ultrasound to check IUD position, but a string check in the office is much quicker and less invasive). -Dr. Dervaitis

Hello Msema- 1) Your right hand numbness is not caused by the IUD. I can think of no pathophysiologic mechanism that would link the IUD to unilateral hand numbness. 2) I can’t comment on your “watery discharge.” Change in menstrual bleeding is common with Mirena. Change in other “discharge” is less common. Hormone changes can sometimes affect the normal production of vaginal secretions (“physiologic discharge”). Discharge can sometimes be associated with infection, so you would need to be checked for this. I’d recommend that you see your doctor for further investigation (of both issues.) -Dr. Dervaitis

I had my mirena removed three months ago after about 6 years, and went to get a new one today. They said my cervix is too small now for a new one and it may be due to scar tissue from my removal. Should I get a second opinion? Is this something that can actually happen, in your experience? I looked it up and didn't find any information about it. I may also be ovulating, and I read that makes the cervix smaller. I was devastated to get this news. Mirena is the only thing that has worked for me

Hi Doc. I have a question, I got Mirene fitted on 17th Aug. I don't have any kids yet. I used to always have very heavy menses which caused iron deficiency anemia as well. Doctor then did the D&C procedure and took out all the polyps and the biopsy resulted the 95% were normal. 5% could become pre cancerous and therefore doctor suggested Mirena. Initially no side effects and then bleeding started on and off. For last 5 days, I have started having extremely painful cramps which start in the evening and go through the night. I had discussed with my gynec as well. She has told me this a side effect of Mirena and has suggested over the counter medicine.its not working, I am in severe pain. I want to know your take on this and if something I can do to help. Hopefully you will read this and would reply.

Hello- Unfortunately I can’t give personalized medical advice advice over the internet. But generally speaking: in a post partum patient, menstruation will depend on the type of IUD (copper versus hormonal) and also whether the patient is breastfeeding. See also video #7. If you are concerned, see your doctor. -Dr. Dervaitis
