nah it's because in a lot of places theres a very specific limit between what a felony is and what a misdemeanor is in terms of theft, they just most likely had done this alot and the store had either watched them before and talleyd it up with what they stole other times(perfectly legal to do) and got them on it all, or they were massive idiots doing 1000 in one trip and did more than they meant to trying to stick close to their limit(they spent 949 pre tax iirc, in Cali I think it is they have a 950 limit for it to be a felony, stuff like that is most likely why they did such a specific yet large amount, definitely not their first time but that isn't inherently why they stole so much)

It went on for a couple of weeks, until finally one of the checkers told me they were doing it. I was angry they didn't call call me the first time! I marched them down to the store, and asked the manager if there was something they could do to work it off (trying to make them take responsibility instead of just coming out of my pocket) but the manager said that child labor laws prevented them. So I asked them to add the cost to my grocery bill, but they insisted on writing it off--probably wasn't more five or six dollars worth. Well when your shoplifting with your own mother you didn't have a very good role model to show you how to be a good mother in the first place... I think the mother of the 19-year-old should get bigger charges cuz obviously she has not been doing her parenting job and she's training a second generation shoplifter and in 18yrs miss pink hair will be shoplifting with her daughter.. never ending cycle possible if not taught lesson now
@lazurm

@@ashleikraemer7558 If you're serious about arresting the mother of the 19 year old, as you wrote, then you don't understand the principals of law that the U.S. is founded on. First of all, what you stated was, to you, "obvious" isn't obvious as it may have been alleged by a thief who is trying everything to have the charges against her dropped and blaming everyone else but herself for her crime. Either way, allegations of that type aren't sufficient cause to even investigate an alleged crime, much less commit one. Second of all, you may want to consider the advantages of understanding bias confirmation and how to avoid it. As to the law, perhaps silence may fit you better than your opinions seem to.

Due to dislocations that had been unaddressed since I was a toddler the Doctors had to break my legs hips and pelvis in many places. Their behavior never changed. The individuals in my environment never held them accountable or came to my rescue...there was never a kind soul that came to rescue me nor give me any guidance... ...but there has never been a day that I've even considered being abusive in any manner toward a child... .. sometimes the "reasons" given me, from my own experience, I would like to call bullshit..but most that know me now don't know of the schizophrenic, satanic pedo's that literally terrorized me at gunpoint as early as seven years of age... ...I just listen and realize it would take longer than anyone would give a shit to explain why I might have a different perspective when it comes to generational or parental influence over someone's actions or behavior as an adult. What I wanted for my nephew who's Father involved, was for him to know that I would hold him accountable and that he never had to ever fear me in any way nor would I ever manipulate him... I work armed security at retail stores and the theft problem has gotten out of hand. It’s so sad. Kudos to this great police officer for doing his job. Most of the time we call PD when people are stealing $1,000+ they take forever to show up and never do anything about it.
@VioletJoy

I constantly hear about the policy to let thieves go if they stole under $1,000. It's crazy. Cops know the DA won't charge them for that. But multiply those smaller losses by the millions, and it all adds up.

I remember stealing all the time in highschool and thinking I was a badass till I got chased out of a store while dodging the cops and realized I was a loser who was gonna throw away their life for cheap fun. Sad seeing these people had to learn this lesson late and mess up their futures for nothing.

yep. 16 years old friends convinced me it was okay. i knew better. thousands of dollars in clothes & makeup. got caught one day with thousands in my car, got booked. had to pay a 10,000 fine and the price of merchandise. i learned my lesson alright. over a decade & a half ago and i still feel shame and don’t go back to where i stole.

I was 11. The store owner saw me slide a comic book in my pants and told my mom. I also had to return it to the owner and apologize. I felt shamed and embarrassed. My mom would have bought the comic, I had no reason whatsoever to steal it. I remember that incident like it was yesterday and it was 60 years ago. Needless to say, I did not grow up to be a thief.

What a lovely mother!! Instead of teaching her girls to be good people and hardworking citizens, she Instead decides to teach her kids how to be really bad thieves ! It's easier to just get a job and be an honest person. The feeling you get when you pay for something with the money you earned from working a job is actually much more amazing than the little rush you get from leaving a store with stuff you didn't pay for.
