the rod that sticks out the end is there to support the weight of the piston. both pistons float inside their bores and are supported by the external bearings under the rods that stick out.this is to reduce any wear on the cylinder bores and pistons due to gravity. it would be very difficult to rebore this or even change out pistons.

also equalizes piston area for even displacement in all cylinders and have cooling water running through them as well

Some do, some don’t . The ones up in Kansas 20 odd years ago when I was doing this line of work were polished from head to toe. Brass shined and paint was clean and fresh. Beautiful old machines.

screw compressor would use about 200 hp to do 900 cfm. yes i know you were joking

Тут минимум каленых деталей так как твердосплавы ещё не были изобретены, но бы уже самокал вк8 . Тут даже нержавейки наверно нет, хрома и никеля в клапанах , поршни скорее чугунные. Местами закаливали и обрабатывали шлифовкой

Common in those days. Didn't sed lobe cams until the Type 26, I think.
