I'm a black man, and ZERO offense taken. I love these old clips...they are a wonderful glimpse of ALL our history....our culture. And when I say 'OUR' history and our culture, I'm referring to everyone (humans). I cannot fathom the obsession of people today who seem to revel in being offended and revel in being fake victims, wearing their false victimhood as a badge of honor. Thank you for posting this historical gem!!

Mind blowing image and sound quality for a film of this vintage. Equally fascinating: these men had no idea we'd still be watching their film over 100 years later on a little screen that fits within the palm of our hands.

I have come back to this so many times now, it is a beautiful relic of a bygone age. The shear antiquity of it brings me almost to tears! I think the singers are wonderful, especially the singer of "silver threads among the gold" . The finale has a unifying spirit to it that rounds out a sterling performance by all!

It is interesting the film is the US version with the British version sound track. They match pretty well except for the closing respecting national anthems.

Wow, this is so cool to see such an early minstrel show with sound! Like, I've seen some footage, I've heard recordings, but to actually hear the voices and see the acting with the costumes, is quite fascinating

I absolutely loved it!! 🙂 I wanted to guess the announcer as Len Spencer, however, I realize that the announcements ceased production in 1910 on the black wax 2 minute cylinders. All I have on DVD is what the MoMA and Kino on video produced with a four disc set of early Edison movies. I realize they made a lot more and wished they expand to create a Kintoscope talkie version, but doubt they will. This was fabulous. 👏 Thank you for sharing.

@Chris Either that, or it's the standard crackling sound of an old record, due to wear and tear, as well as the fact that the record material itself isn't perfectly smooth, causing hiss.

@@truesoundchris Thanks. It IS the sound of an acoustic recording, but it sounds so good, I got fooled the first time. (The sound of the orchestra should have been the giveaway - it's the quintissential sound of an acoustically recorded one.)

Yes, synchronised sound was. The sound, & the accompanying film were on separate strips, however, in 1910, there had been sound, & film on the same strip by a man called Eugene Lauste in a backyard in Brixton, England. He took his invention to America, but no one would back him because Edison had another go at sound, & film…this was the second attempt he made. Episode 13 of Hollywood; a celebration of the American silent film (on KZitem) covers this area of history very well (except where it says the sound for the film showing two men dancing has been lost; they’ve since found it).

Sound on film in 1910 was impractical and was not nearly as good fidelity as this acoustic recording. Remember electronic amplification dates from 1914 and the proper understanding and design of audio amplifiers only dates from the late teens. Deforest Case Sponible sound on film were the first truly successful technology.

I don't understand how this was recorded. Was it recorded on a 6 minute (I didn't know that existed in 1913) acoustical (there was no electric amplified recording before Lee DeForest's work in the early 1920's) Ambrola cylinder or Diamond disc, and then lip synced?
@michaelmills2625

It was shot live. The group is facing the recording horn. Edison's vertical recording process was more sensitive than the ordinary lateral method, so this recording was possible for them.

The sound is synchronized to a jumbo sized cylinder. Pantograph amplification was used to boost the level. The sound recording is fully mechanical.
