In the plot, Charlie plays an indolent fireman who initially misses a fire alarm because he's asleep. During the daily drills and duties, mishaps abound, including the reversal of horses and Chaplin’s humorous misuse of the fire engine to make an unappetizing soup. The story thickens when an aristocratic man and his daughter arrive at the fire station, leading to a scheme where the man conspires with the fire chief to deliberately set his house on fire for insurance money, with the added twist that the chief can marry his daughter if he abets the arson.

Meanwhile, a real fire starts elsewhere, and despite initial disregard, Charlie, upon understanding the gravity of the situation, leaps into action. Complications escalate when the scheming father, unaware that his daughter is still in their house, sets it on fire. In a heroic turn, Charlie abandons another ongoing fire to save the daughter, managing a daring rescue.
Critically, The Fireman received mixed reviews, appreciated for its comedic elements and criticized for its excessive slapstick by some. The scenes involving reversed film for comic effect and street scenes of Los Angeles added to the film’s charm. Later, in 1932, the film was re-released with added music and sound effects by Van Beuren Studios through RKO Radio Pictures.
In essence, The Fireman is reflective of Chaplin’s comedic genius, combining slapstick, situational comedy, and character work that aligns with his famous portrayal of the Tramp, marking an important piece in his filmography during the silent film era.
