Hi John, Fascinating story! I'm an historian by trade, which is a large part of what drew me to antique radio restoration. All of these radios have stories to tell, from the more unusual (as you have related), to perhaps the more mundane. But the point is these radios are an important part of our history and it's great to hear these grand old ladies sing again! I really enjoy your videos and I hope all is well with you! Jason

Fantastic history for that radio. I too would leave the top cloth in that condition as long as I could stop it from getting any worse. Will love to hear the sound it produces and see all those valves lit up. Ian.

I was once told that any radio can be restored. It's true. Sometimes the cabinet is shot, but with effort and creativity a chassis can usually be brought bak to life. And you're right...this radio does weigh a ton. Thanks for coming by. Regards, John

Hi, been following your videos for a bit and just wanted to say hi and how much I enjoy them. Your advice to slow down & enjoy the process is something I think we tend to forget these days. I also have been following bandersen (spelling) working on a Brunswick which is of same era & coils. He mentioned away of fixing them too, so worth an email. What a story, & what provenance! I'd just clean the top & love it, it's the history of it and who would want to remove it's history and individuality.

Hey John, You'll be able to fix that coil. A bright light, big magnifying glass and no real coffee should do it. Glad you got the speaker, neat to have the right speaker too. TRF circuits are straight RF amp, then detect and audio amp. Clean all connection including the screw connection too. Very interesting story too. Regards, Rick

By paying careful attention to him and other sharp individuals, I've pretty much learned how to repair the broken coil wire. Thank you, Jason. I've done three or four "radio with a story" vids. The viewers seem to like them a lot. I started doing them because no one else was doing it. Like you said, all of these radios have a story to tell, and inquiring minds want to know. :-) All is well here. I'm one of these jokers who's either good, or dead. None of that in-between nonsense. Thanks for watching and commenting. It's very much appreciated. Regards, John

John, my favorite videos of yours are always from the corner of the deck with a radio, and a story and that is an excellent story! I would leave it original too and just get it working. I was fortunate when my mom passed last year. My 2 brothers and I spent 4 days going through her stuff together and dividing everything up and it turned out to be a great time of remembrance, and without any fighting. No radios though, LOL

I've read and/or heard many stories of hidden wealth and bickering heirs. Greed is too often the downfall of many families. I once knew a fellow that rushed into his recently deceased father's home and took everything in sight, claiming it all for himself, refusing to share even one item. The remaining family members decided to prove him wrong, so they took him to court and won. The guy lost it all. He got what he deserved. Thanks for coming by. Regards, John

Picked one up for $50 at an estate sale. It had been in a garage hosting several generations of mice. Replaced the capacitors-not fun as they were sealed in tar . Made a new speaker from black poster paper and it receives okay for a device it’s age. I’ve heard it referred to as a cat coffin radio.

Ah the old "spear bid" on Ebay. That Rola speaker is a good speaker. Rola and Magnavox made very good early speakers. Buying a radio from a collector could be risky because collectors generally sell off their less desireable radios in favor of better radios that they replaced the lesser one with.

Daniel, I don't own any globe tubes, as working on really old radios (from the 1920s) has never been my thing. I don't much care for battery-operated units. They do look cool, especially the cabinets, but I lean toward the tombstone types from the middle to late 1930s. Regards, John

from what i know of the atwater kent radios(i have a 44 and a parts set in parts i forget the model off hand) the cans are transformers and whats inside of that box in the back(encased in tar?) should be the guts of the radio(caps, resistors etc) btw the can transformers are also encased in tar.

Hi John, I am restoring a model 44, at this point I have the the electronics working and can pick up 1 station that is close by. The radios is not very sensitive and can't pick anything else. I live in an area with lots of stations so its a radios sensitivity issue. Any experience or advice with this? thank you
