"Can never work???" This song describes a point of time in which the people were visited by the Spirit of Anarchy before their efforts were squeezed out of existence again by Fascist and Establishment forces. This scenario plays out again and again throughout history. Paris Commune I'll offer you as but one example. Hell, study, well, ALL of the so-called Indian Wars in America, like the Riel Rebellions that brought us Manitoba or the Lumbee struggles versus the KKK in North Carolina.

I love anarchists. To truly be one, you must believe in the best inside of people. It takes great courage to stand for this belief now when there are so many examples of the darkness of mankind. Personally, I'd rather live in a free, dangerous society than a closed, safe one. It's easy for me to criticize the methods of the workers in the video from my cushy air-conditioned office in the U.S. But if I had lived then, I might easily have become one of the violent protesters.

Hello, hope you're still doing good and well air-conditioned after 14 years, but I don't agree with you on the fact that violence is always a bad thing. Sometimes it's a necessity and necessities can't be classified as ethical or unethical...

The issue is, as even the greek philosophers had noted, if there is a very unballanced distribution of wealth you can not have freedom in a society. Wealth generates its own degree of power and that power will be used to generate more wealth. Wallmart has money to get a PR company to convince a local council to allow them to open up in a small town. It opens and as a consequence they ruin locally owned business. More (low pay low quality jobs) can be created but wealth is drained away.

I'm an spanish anarchoindividualist and the spanish civil war was probably the most horrible event in our entire history, where fascists, communists, anarchosyndicalists, republicans and lots of other political groups destroyed the country. The spanish civil war was no fight for ideologies but a fight that probed the extent of human savagery. The fascist killed a lot of people, but the exact same was done by the communists and the anarchists. En vez de decir NO PASARÁN, decid NO VOLVERÁ A PASAR.

What the people organized in Spain in 1936 was truly amazing. It is the clearest example of the effectiveness of an anarchist system, though it was a sadly short lived experience. I can only imagine the terror that swept over Spain with their defeat. I feel for the 716 of my own Canadian brothers and sisters who died fighting for this cause.

exactly. Tha is why I prefer mutualist and cooperativist models for most businesses that need to be large to be efficient. I am also not averse to some state ownership (for strategic resources and sectors) but would prefer that these would be controled by independent boards -why not chosen by a system of lottery Like a greek Bulé, like jury duty. Not averse to wealth but excessive wealth is negative. Like that millionaire guy that gave most of his fortune to charity said:

All aspects of society are interconnected. Economic factors indeed do cause much of what anarchists fight against, namely exploitation which is inherent in the capitalist system, imperialism, totalitarianism, and the state, which protects the interests of the bourgeoisie and gives them the ability to hold private property allowing exploitation to take place.

Whoever dreams of an "anarchic state" is not an anarchist. The "Spirit of Anarchy," as I termed it, is struggle--ongoing and recurring. You are absolutely correct to observe that power establishments do not just go away; they are born again and again. Therefore anarchist struggle is born again and again to meet its eternal enemy: all things mandatory. What you said "can never work" I say "works again and again!"

Our reactions to this are molded to our historic prespective. My state sponsored the inquisition but also the discoveries. And more recently It gave us a dictatorship for decades but also a wellfare system that, not being perfect, does give you some protection. Governement is exercised by humans, humans are week, so you have to keep vigilant about those weaknesses and demand that governement does work for the good of all. An uphill batle, but one that needs to be kept

I agree not all capitalists are evil. To be honest few if any are. But they are more often than not selectively amoral. My parents were capitalists (they owned a small trucking company) untill they were forced to sell and retire because of the competititon of companies that grew faster. The difference was that my parents believed in paying their bills by the end of the month whilst these other companies believed in protracting payements as much as possible financing themselves with this credit.

they do, but some in easter europe only installed them because the EU fines states who do not enforce air quality standards. These coal laws are mostly not in use as natural gaz central heating is the norm in northern europe so coal burning isnt an issue. About the pizzas I dont know about the coal ovens, the ones I visited in Italy used wood...oak...apparently it burns more slowly.

@Aconitum_napellus

Well certain people, who did not employ people, were allowed to remain in possession of those things that they need to feed themselves. An example is the garbage truck drivers mentioned in Augustine Souchy's excellent book 'With the peasants of Aragon'(hint read it). He talks about how they were allowed to maintain their ownership of the trucks, because they were effectively self employed and did not exploit anyone else's poverty. So yeah they were voluntary, it was a social revolution people were associating together because they could see that it was a good idea.

That elitist mentality leads to the destruction of socialism in the name of socialism. Not everyone needs economic expertise in order to struggle against injustice. Most of those Spanish anarchists didn't have it, yet they knew about exploitation & about Leninists who oppress them by claiming to know more about "surplus" & economics. Their achievements from their position of supposed "ignorance" remain greater than those of any Leninist "experts" who end up becoming the new oppressors&exploiters

By the way, there are some Durruti images on the video, if we had anyone like him that could reorganize the fight may be we could have a chance... ¡Viva la revolucion libertaria camaradas!

The institutions in society that are responsible for the oppression of certain groups of people are created by capitalism. The culture of selfishness and abuse that comes along with capitalism is what is responsible for things such as women being treated unequally. In a system of egalitarian economic relations in which cooperation is stressed we would not have these problems, because the economic relations in which we live shape our culture.
@knowtwodrugs

That's not entirely true. I have thought about this a lot, and you'd still have to pay property taxes. Unless maybe you're a disabled veteran or american indian, or put the property in somebody's name who fits the description. You would still have to play a small part in the monetary system just to keep your land from being taken away.

There is a big difference though. American libertarians want freedom for the individual to do whatever he wants as much as possible. So if you can become a milionair (even if by let us say poluting or creating a religious sect) that is ok. In Europe, libertarians see themselves limited by a basic morality that includes social justice, being fraternal etc that would not allow for such things. To be an anarchist isnt burning cars in the street it is to accept that a higher morality rules you
