Thank you for listening! Isn’t her performance of this just lovely? What a great artist she was! For me, It is smart to have Kleenex nearby when listening to this.

Yes. Soooo many musicians were forced to flee/hide out/ get out or be imprisoned and killed. What a fraught time!! It affected musicians all over Europe. It is interesting to read who did what when. Who (which musicians) hid people in their chateaux, who escaped to America and how, and how (if)did they get back after the carnage? who did and didn’t sing for Hitler when he sent his “invitations” to perform for him. Yikes! And listen to how gorgeous this music is!

There is a great book by Ida Cook (“The Bravest Voices”) that tells the story of 2 sisters who were part of a movement to help these musicians during this period. Amelia Galli-Curci is one important singer involved in it. It’s amazing to read about these musicians we listen to and see how they coped.
